    Default 3sgte Turbo Selection Thread

So I can't see the CT15b on the Caldina lasting too long at 18psi nor does the actuator rod like the anti-lag and decides to jam open leaking all my boostz so I now have the fun job of selecting a new turbo to use.

Tuner has reccommended a GT2871rs with a .64 rear ie something like this Garrett GT2871R-56T. He thinks with E85 and pushing it we could ring close to 250awkw with obvious supporting mods like some cams and 1000cc injectors.

Initially I was thinking a GTX3071r but he feels it is oversized for the power goals so I'd be better off with the smaller turbo for response reasons. Slightly more expensive option but similar size is the Borg Warner EFR6758 T25. Tuner stands by Garrett as being the shit but has not used the new range of borg warner stuff so just assumed they were truck turbos. So what would others reccommend looks @ Justen.

If you're going a 71 or 76 mm compressor then definately get a GT30 rather than a GT28, the turbine mismatch isn't worth it. You have to build a maifold anyway so you'd be better off getting one built with a T3 flange as it gives a lot more option for future upgrades. The GTX3071 or 76 would be a good thing for what you're after.

The 3S is pretty soft in handling any kind of detonation easily cracking pistons or the block. In light of this I'd recomend against pushing a smaller turbo hard to meet your target, you'd be better off with less boost pressure from a bigger more efficient turbo.

The EFR's look really interesting but I haven't found anyone who's run one on a 3S. I do know of several people planning to run them on MR2's in the US but they are all waiting on turbo's that were ordered as far back as December.

Cheers Josh, kind of aligns with my initial idea and also allows for additional headroom in the future should I want to chase bigger numbers. The Borg Warner EFR seems to push slightly higher numbers then the GT2871RS so if I was going T2 I think it'd be the best option.

The Croatian 3s guy on here seems to swear by the borg warners for response.

if you are after resonse. have a look at the borgwarner EFR 6255 or the 6258. not sure how they will handle antilag but someone has to try it first
also. how have you setup antilag on your 3S?

They are a little too small for the power goals, 6758 is the smallest I'd want to go of the Borg Warner's. I have a Haltech PS1000 installed. Antilag is only for boost off the line not continual use. Below 5kmph with the clutch depressed and greater then 30% throttle on board it'll build revs to 5000rpm then cut spark & retard timing dumping raw fuel into the exhaust, keep the foot buried it'll build 18psi off the line and hard cut at 5300rpm. It is simply a matter of dumping the clutch and then launching up the road well in theory anyway. In practice the standard turbo jammed the wastegate actuator rod open resulting in zero boosts after releasing the clutch.

Sounds sensational and with an aftermarket turbo should be great for a killer launch at the drags or on a hillclimb.

so it's really 2-step launch control not antilag?

Semantics, I can build boost off the line. I called it a 2 step when requesting the tune, tuner called it anti-lag I continue to label it as that.

To compare EFR with Garrett is in one word: silly.

EFR's spoolup and power is really, objective, 10 years in front of garrett's today's technology. I tested 62 67 and 91. let's just say that 9180 /1000hp/ has an exactly same spool as GT35 with 0.82ex ar.

    Is that enough?

Or 62, has 360whp, full boost AS STOCK ONE?

Well, I have sold 200 GT turbos....and will sell zero in the future.

And yes, 6758 is a MISMATCH. 6255 DOES NOT EXISTS. (at least for now).
6268 has a proper comp/turbine ratio. And 67 will give ONLY a few HP more than 62, so...buy 62. 20hp more is not worth, and the price is THE SAME.

i have GT3582R now. and would also like a super response turbo for 250kw atw. but with continuous antilag running.

to be honest, I really don't know how EFR will endure antilag.

But do you rally the car? Antilag is only good for one thing, and that is in rallying while going in/out of the slow curves.

For anything else is useless, not to mention that it destroys engine, valves, turbos....

Heh....u r on the hard side of driving...

I don't know sincerely. I saw and bought and tried the turbos. These are so responsive (especially the small ones, 6258). I can't vouch for antilag. That one you will just have to try yourself. They say it is very hi temp resistive. How good....god knows

Awesome, thanks for the info. I am really keen to go down the EFR path, will be interesting to see the results and look forward to chopping WRXs & Evos
