Depends on what your definition of 'Better' is
R154 is perceived as stronger
R154 is more expensive
R154 is heavier
Both are able to be bolted to 1JZ or 2JZ with the correct bellhousing.

ok that helps a bitthanks! so would a standard w58 hold up to 300-500wrhp?
I'd suggest some google workI suspect you'll find quite a bit on both gearboxes
FYI, as a general rule it is torque that breaks gearboxes, not outright power... but at 500rwhp I'd be suggesting the R154, or in fact the V16x or perhaps Tremec options...
Its also worth bearing in mind that the longevity of a W58 (or any gearbox for that matter) also depends to some extent on the driving style, clutch, tyres etc as well...

im sure a w series would handle 300 if you putted around lol. just go for a r154 much stronger. by the time you go though a few w series it will cost you as much as a r154 anyway. i broke a r154 with 500 and two clutchs in 6months so u tell me how a w series will go?![]()
driving style will break a 154 AND 2 clutches in six months more than what the motor its bolted to
wait maybe it is the motor not being strong enough for said driver and having to drop the clutch to often

assembly is just the opposite of disassembly - just you swear in different spots!
does the 154 suffer the same problem as the 58, in when under power/ high revs, wont shift into 2nd ?
tremec are nice, the tko500 weighs ~47kg without bell housing. just incase anyone wanted to know haha.
i dont have a funny or cool signature.
The R154 is a total POS box. It shifts like a truck gearbox, actually worse. If you are not making high torque, then go for a W series, or V16X or T56.
i have a full r154 conversion kit for sale if you are interested
$2500 will get you
r154 with jz bellhousing
all bellhousing bolts
clutch master cyl (recently recoed)
clutch slave cyl (recently recoed)
clutch hard line
shifter
tailshaft
clutch - exedy cushion button (less than 3000kms old almost brand new)
flywheel
pressure plate
clutch fork
throwout bearing
also i wouldnt say the r154 is a POS box... ive driven a few different cars with r154 and only one of them felt like a bucket of shit and that was due to it having fucked syncros and generally having the ass end flogged out of it...

yeah ive had a couple of different r154s over the years and i dont think there that bad for shifting at all. im making around 500 and i give it a fair bit and shifts fine. only my clutch that let me down really but have since gone to a twin plate to hopefully solve that problem. manily the 1st gear thrust washer that goes in them but you can now get them upgraded from the states cheap like i did.
