    Default Roll cage designs...

I recently purchased an AE82 that has a 6 point Bonds bolt in roll cage in it.

Looking at the cage I would of thought that top of the trianglulated section would be above the driver for maximum protection but after speaking to Bond they assure me that it is designed to be fitted the way it is pictured above with it over the passenger side.

Just about every other cage I see out there has the high point above the driver for what I would of thought is maximum protection in a roll over or am I missing something???

that looks like pretty much (except none of hte rearward-facing legs are fitted) like Drawing 253-3A on page 8 from the CAMS manual section on roll cages?

Were you expecting something like Drawing 253-9C (page 9 of same PDF)

I was expecting it to look like 253-5.

My cage looks like the 253-5 but the trianglulated section is in the opposite position which is what i'm unsure of.

It really shouldn't make much of a difference, either way would provide adequate protection. I understand that you are worried about the top right hand corner being crushed towards the bottom left, but for that to happen the main hoop would have to completely buckle inwards, which requires a LOT of force for tubing that size. The diagonal member is to triangulate the hoop, to stop it from flexing to form a parallelogram which would require much less force. Either direction would achieve this goal, and it may be orientated that way for better visibility or room.

If you are worried about strength then dont muck around with bolt in crap. Get a welded cage.
The fit of those front legs are shocking. Are you sure they didnt just fit a bond cage out of a totally different Corolla/ lancer/ ke70?

The cage fitted is to suit an AE82.

I asked them about whether or not the cage was designed to go through the dash board or in front of it and they told me that it was designed to just touch the front of the dash rather than go through it.

I'm not worried about the strength of the cage, I don't plan on rolling the car but it's reassuring to have something there to protect me if I do. It was more as to why the would have built it with the triangulated high point above the passenger rather than the driver.

Done possibly to allow a bit more space for the seat to be further back?

My ke35 had the diagonal the way you were expecting, and it sat right at the back of my head which always concerned me... I put the really dense FIA roll cage padding over it to try and minimise any damage it might do to my brains, but it still worried me.

I'm designing the cage for my TA22 at the moment and my only concern is where the diagonal needs to go as i sit pretty far back. When doing some research i found some manufacturers run the diagonal on the rear bracing, like the Cusco 5pt bolt in cages have:

I think you may be right Adam. It would have be pretty tight for the seat to be mounted if it was running the opposite way.

Some companies make 2 models, one for fashion/jr street racers & one that will actually pass tech/spec for a sanctioning body or 2.

We have a bond cage in the gemini and the diagonal is on the passengers side.
However in the corolla the diagonal is above the driver.
Like you guys said...it just depends who builds it.
Some have diagonals on both sides....as you can see if you look at some of these pictures.

Those front legs are all wrong they look like their to fit a coupe not a sedan and the side intrusion bars are way too high for a street car, it wouldn't pass for a cams event and I think the jacks would have a problem with it on the road. As for the diagonal its preferred for it to be on the drivers side in a single seater, if it were in a two seater it would need two diagonal braces.

If thats the cage Bond make for an AE82 then they should be seriously embarrassed by their poor fit and quality. Is it an alloy cage? If so you cant run it in an cams events.

If you want the diagonal the other way just unbolt the main hoop and flip it around and rebolt in.
