-GT- : i would love to hear of who that was? I am sure I have read about it aswell but can never find the info again when i need it! LOL :-)
I was doing some digging around recently and thought i came across a couple of mentions of people retaining the cover and not having cooked any coils after moderate running time, but can't place who... Also, i was looking at 2NZ coils but assume they're the same as 1NZ - Sam..?
Not an overly helpful contribution i know, but some thoughts. I have a feeling a car i'm thinking of that retained the cover was an RA/TA celica... anyone?

Why not be creative with the cover you have? You really dont want to put coil over plugs on a firewall. They are not FMCWLP's are they? (firewall mount coil with lead plugs) So you have it painted? Paint it again after you have modified it. Maybe look at cutting the holes but the finish the edge of each hole so they taper down around the COP? or cut the holes and make a stainless steel insert around them so the top of the COP can be seen, but hide the wiring.

nah my backup plan was to use firewall mount coil with leads to the plugs if i couldnt source COP units to fit under the cover. Yes I could also re-paint the cover as well and do as you suggested. Shall investigate it further when I get the time and report back my findings.
