Default 5M-GE oil pressure regulator (cylinder head) help required.

    Hey guys,

Just wondering if someone could give me a little in sight of what exactly the oil pressure regulator, on top of the 5M-GE head, and what's is purpose...

I had low oil pressure in the 5M-GE, so I replaced it with a brand new oil pump, although slightly better, I seem to have very noisy hydraulic lifters....
Could this regulator be my problem?

Any help would be greatly appreciated...
    Cheers,
    Mik.

It regulates the oil pressure going to the lifters.
Pull it off, clean all the gunk out of it, and refit it.
It should quieten up the lifters a bit (depending how stuffed the valve train is)

    No idea to be honest.
The 5MGE has it in the spark plug valley, really obvious.
Perhaps the 5ME has it under the cam cover?

Its also worth noting that the oil gets to the lifters by going through the cams. So if they are gummed up, the lifter won't get oil.
(at least, thats my recollection of how it works)

    Yeah, I thought so...
I did pull the regulator out and clean it, replaced The lifters and started it back up... I even shimed the spring in the reg with a 1mm shim to increase pressure!!!
But sure enough, as soon as rpm gets to about 3,500-4,000 it gives what seems to be a valve train noise!!!!

The engine has just been rebuilt about 150kms ago by me... So I know for fact all components are spotless and clearances are correct... So go figure!!!

I Appreciate your thoughts on this crUZida!!!

    Thanks mate.

Ps. After referring back to Toyotas original specs for this engine, my oil pressure is spot on.... However, that is checking from where the oil press. Switch is installed, not the cyl. Head.

did you re-bleed the lash adjustors before re-fitting them? The TSRM has a section on doing it. Otherwise, they can take ages to self-bleed.

    see Step 4

plus section on checking the oil pressure reg in the head:

I bleed them out, but didn't re prime them...
The lifter noise is gone, but what sounds to be a lifter noise still occurs upwards of 3500RPM only... It's really driving me crazy!!!
I went through your links, had a bit of info, thanks mate!!

I've just bought a new oil pressure reg. From Toyota.... Let's see what happens here...
