Default Lug Mount vs Radial Mount Calipers

    Hey Guys,

Currently going through options for brake upgrades, and I have come across a bit of a dilemma.

Radial mount vs lug mount calipers

What are the benefits/disadvantages of each? Particularly given that the stock setup is lug mount.

The way i see it, an adapter for radial mount is probably a bit easier to do if the mount offset needs adjusting, if there is no need for the offset to be adjusted, then probably line ball between them

There is a difference in price, with the radial mount calipers being about twice as expensive, and can't see savings in mounts making the difference, but it isn't all about price

    Cheers
    Nathan

There ae lots of threads like this:

eg - RS Motorsport :: Classic Speed Restored • View topic - Lug mount versus Radial mount calipers

Basically better braking efficiency with radial mount.

Most higher end motorcycles use radial mount calipers as well

Yeah i did manage to find that site on my searches, but how does that relate when you need an adapter off a lug mount for the radial mount?

Does the adapter undo the advantage??

I would say no. But I'd ask Kevin Gavin from SBCS for his thoughts

What calipers are you looking at??

I run Porsche 996 Brembos (monobloc & radial mounted), got them pretty cheap and near new.

The radial mount adaptors were pretty easy to design/make, and have adjustability to suit a range of rotor diameters and hat heights.

eg. I currently run them on 323x30 supra rotors, but could easily run 345x28 M3 CSL rotors by spacing the caliper up 10mm and shimming the mount to the knuckle to align over the rotor.

The benefit with radial mount when you are doing a conversion is that you dont have to worry about the caliper lugs being the wrong place. I mean like if you fitted a nissan caliper to a toyota and the lugs are just in the wrong place. Makes it very hard to make an adaptor. With radial mount you can use the factory holes in the upright and then bolt caliper on far enough away.
