Default Motorolla part in my TA22 can I remove it? Problems?

    Hi all,

Does anyone know what this unit would be doing in my car? it was installed before I brought the car and it doesnt look like its necessary considering that there is a ignition coil connected to my distributor cap for ignition. What does this do?

    Uploaded with ImageShack.us

    Thanks alot, Tyler.

The car will need this. I had a similar one in my green '22 for a very old electronic ignition system I had. Just unplug the lead at the bottom and see if the car runs

It controls the ignition. Coil supplies the spark, and the distributor distributes (duh) it to each cylinder, but you need something to run it all.

Why dont you just find a tidier place to mount it. If it was mounted on a flat surface it wouldnt look so last minute.

Looks like your TA22 has been converted to electronic ignition at some point. The stock 2T motor had a standard points equipped dizzy. I think you'll find that yours has got the upgraded dizzy (no points). Probably better to stick with the electronic ignition unit - will generally give you better engine running in the long run.

If you think it is big and ugly, you can always get a more modern units such as an MSD6AL-2. Of course, this will cost you money. A cheaper option is to clean it up, polish it, and mount it tidily, cut the wires to length, and run the wiring in corrugated split tube.

The MSD unit can be purchased from a number of retailers. Perhaps try MSD directly, or maybe Ebay. Don't forget with the MSD you will not only be up for the initial purchase cost, you then need to work out how to install it, then take your car in for a tune (preferrably on a dyno).

Me personally, if the thing was working and I wasn't doing an all out rebuild on the car, then I would start with the wet'n'dry, sand it, polish it, and remount it in a neater fashion, because even though you think it is big - it's about the same size as all the others on the market! Seriously, they are all that big (or close enough to) and that comes down to heat dissipation.

    Hi,

Agreed. Clean it up if you want, but to remove it or replace it isn't good value. If that's your biggest issues with a 30+ yo car then you're doing well.

I would have thought getting out of the car after a pussy cruise without showing your boner would have been the biggest issue?

Well, when taking my front end apart due to some recently found retarded damage.. i found all these leads attached to the highbeam (cable tied) took em off and they lead to the motorolla unit, wasnt even connected apart from it being attached to the positive terminal and earthed to the chassis.

Does the car now run? If it does, then somebody on here will probably purchase the Motorolla unit from you. If it doesn't then you may want to put it back and pretend you never removed it...
