    Default Anyone done a 1JZ-GTE into AE86?

I have access to two cars.
One is a JZ70 Supra, the other is a beat up AE86. (Both RHD)

Price is kinda right, that is why I am considering the project.

I have seen the threads on the 1G in an AE86, but no mention of a 1JZ-GTE.

If anyone has any constructive comments, tips or pointers about the difficulty of this project, I would appreciate hearing them.

    • I know it won't be easy.

    • Primary goal is a weekend only mostly straightline car.

    • This isn't my first swap, I know there are all manner of pain in the a** problems that crop up.

    • It would be my first FR swap.

    • Probably going to keep the Supra auto box.

Lead tipped arrow is right. JZ engines are big and heavy, and the AE86 has a short engine bay. To get it in and leave room for a radiator and intercooler you'll probably be looking at recessing the firewall - which is no problem if you have good metalworking skills, but a deal breaker if you don't.

I think I've seen a 1JZ in an AE86 somewhere before, can't recall where but I'm quite sure it has been done before. Doesn't seem like an ideal marriage to me though.

Bootfull of lead weights, and the driver sitting on the rear seat?

Seriously though, good luck with the project, I'm sure everyone here would like updates on the project if you decide to go ahead with it.

There's one in NZ, was posted up here a while ago, I'll try to dig up the thread.

Was a Japanese one in Zoom a while back with a 2JZ in it, drag car (duh...). Was supposed to be fairly quick too...

    1) it would bugger up the weight distribution of the car for sure.
    2) it would have to be a tight fit, not an easy conversion.
    3) i think you'd have trouble getting it legal - 1.6 na to 2.5 turbo..

Not to be completely silly about it, but I had considered that there would possibly need to be some semi-creative re-location of the brake booster.

The need for some metalworking is a given, but I don't want to turn this into a lifetime project. MIG welders are a great deal of fun...

I guess a few measurements are in order.

What is a 1JZ-GTE likely to be like at 150,000km?
In need of valve seals and that's it? Or is it likely to be a project in itself?

I know that the naturally aspirated 2J will last nearly indefinitely, but I don't have experience with the turboed version.

    Some googling found:

A scanning of the HPI article on the Japanese drag 2JZ AE86. Includes an engine bay shot. I love the bonnet cutout to clear the turbo.

    Page 1 2 3 4

    And a few pics here

That last one makes it look like the strut brace passes over approx cyl #4. Very front heavy.

Nope aint me... his forum nick is now "1JZ-Rolla" He managed to fit a 1jz into an AE71 panel-wagon. FWIW, an AE71 has an even smaller engine bay than an AE86 (there's more room at the firewall)

    Eddie.
    4agte finally completed. 234rwkw @ 8125rpm. Tis fun

If it is for a straight line car then I think it is a great idea if you are pretty handy with conversions.

Check the laws in your state with max capacity though. AFAIK they are less than 1000kg which in QLD means that a 1jz is not legal.

Also, there was an rb25 sprinter up here with a single turbo, manual etc. (still a Nissan engine ) that ran 10.9 a while back

I posted the NZ one on the old forums, it was a 2JZ-GTE though. This is a link to the for sale ad but pics are gone -
