I'll shed a silent tear for what is proposed for this sprinter :'(

Conversions like this really do destroy the soul of the car. Something light and spirited shouldn't have such a big lump of metal crammed in to it.

If you are keen and do a good job I will forgive you to some extent.

If you want to make it really interesting though I would suggest that you seriously consider something like a 1UZFE 4.0l twin cam all alloy V8. Makes decent power out of the box, can make an absolute shitload with a bit of work and a turbo and weighs only slightly more than the 4AG. It is also considerably shorter than the 1J so you probably won't have issues with firewall clearance. Exhaust manifolding (especially if you want a turbo) may be a bit of an issue. A supercharger would negate a lot of that problem though.

    Good luck either way.

If interest in the 1UZ conversion one was done for TV here in NZ, check out the forum at http://www.importx.co.nz/forum for details. 1UZ into an AE85 with I think 12 week build time.

for a straight line car then it would really be a bucketload of fun...5th gear wheelspin can be quite hairy though

if you want it to be any kind of a handler then I wouldnt do it...the 1G sprinters are enough of a lead tipped arrow, I wouldnt imagine a 1JZ would be any better

    Thanks for the link.
Looks like a bit of clearance work on the firewall.

Oh, as for the sprinter, there really isn't much left to desecrate.

I'm not stating that the sprinter is anything particularly special. They are good in that they are one of the last RWD corollas and are generally not a bad car but they are hardly earth shattering.

What I have a bit of an issue with is modifications that take away from what the intent of the car was without offering anything special.

Big, heavy engines in small cars are fun, but you have to compensate for them with suspension configuration, unless you want a pure drag or burnout car. Cars that don't handle suck.

You can't really compensate for that sort of thing with suspention, a front heavy car will always handle like one no matter what you try to do to it. I guess you can make it better though. Cool idea for a drag car, but I'd be going for something longer...

Yeah, as I understand it they didn't have to move the firewall (sure I've seen pics of an Aussie one that didn't) but they wanted better weight balance. If you have any detailed queries on it I would sign up and talk to Gadget on the forums as he did a lot of the work.

There is a 1UZ in an AE86 in Melbourne, very well done, apparently just "slots right in"

I have a video at home which has an AE86 with a 2JZ, it run a 8.something qtr, its pretty damn cool!
I think it would be an interesting conversion, but with plenty of custom engineering!

If you live in melb and wish to check it out i'd be happy to lend it to you, anyways good luck with the challenge if you chose to go through with it.

    cheers

It's funny actually - they have scans of the High Performance Imports magazine it was featured in up on their site.

As far as the "it's sacrilege" thing goes - who gives a toss. It'll hammer and be an absolute handful - two key things needed for an exciting driving experience!

    Cheers,
