    Hi there banana_socks,
In frame rebuild is not an ideal solution - it is however something which can successfully get a car back on the road where time constraints are the bigger problem!
They are typically called a 'kerosene' rebuild. Yes you will get crud on the crank and such like and this is where large volumes of kerosene to wash it all down come into play!

Also getting any ring to seal can be a lot easier if you use an almost non existent lube in the bores such as CRC or WD40. The rings are seated usually within a few seconds after the first fire up with this method as opposed to coating the bores in heavy oil. However in a backyard situation you may have a point with the chrome rings - particularly if it were just a quick job to get vehicle running again...

    Cheers,
    Jason

As said, doing this in car is not ideal but it got me out of a jam. I put lots of rags over the crank so most of the crud fell on those. Then washed everything down with kero to follow up. My friend the mechanic who helped me said that next time the motor better be out for a job like this. I can see this being so much easier on a bench or engine stand.
