that describes a spigot bearing noise. could be the input shaft bearing, but its a bit more common for the spigot bearing to go, rather than the input shaft.Originally Posted by boxh34d

Hey there.
The last 3 times i have started up the car cold ( MA71 ), there has been an intermittent ( sp? ) noise.
Sounds kind of like a contact kind of noise, coming from the gearbox. Does it when sitting in neutral, and when driving mildly in low revs. Depressing the clutch makes the sound go away.
It only does it when cold, so at first i thought it might be low oil levels or something, but the gearbox and engine are both fine. once it is warm, it is all good. It did do it for longer this morning that the last couple though. The box still shifts nicely, and doesnt have any crunching or selecting issues apart from the fairly standard thing of sometimes having to play to get it in reverse.
Thinking maybe the front bearing in the gearbox or something else??
Anyone have any ideas??
thanks>

At least it shouldn't be expensive to fix.
Sounds like a good time to change over the clutch now rather than in a few months time like the original plan.
+ rep for the prompt reply.
thanks.
change it sooner better than later.
always a good idea to replace the small, cheap parts when doing alot of work on your car, will save you heartache later
Eldar.O.
if it's noisy with the clutch engaged then it can't be the spigot, it'd be turning with the input shaft.
it must be something else, maybe the cluster bearing or input shaft bearing. is it a scraping/grinding noise?
beer me!
I reckon its the imput shaft bearing m8![]()
Like you said if you put your foot in clutch and noise goes away i would say its that.

either or, the box still needs to be removed.
would be a good idea to replace it if you have the box out. just for piece of mind

It was already booked in for monday to get a good check over, valve clearences, ignition, fuel etc etc, so this is just something else.
It is always the $2 part which shags the $2000 part, so yes, it will be changed over immediately.
While i have the box out, all those bearings, rear engine seal, and the clutch kit are going to be done. ( the clutch would need to be done in 6 to 12 months anyway )
I think an uprated pressure plate, standard type disk will be the call of the day, just for a bit more bite.
Thanks guys.
