Need help removing r154

Ey guys,

I just got the 7mgte out of my soarer and have it and the r154 hanging from an engine crane in the garage. I want to remove the gearbox so i can attach the engine to an engine stand. i've removed all the bolts holding the bell housing on and have managed to move the bellhousing about 2cm away from the motor, but it won't go any further, lots of prying, jiggling and swearing from me and mates hasn't worked..

Is there some special technique to removing these things?? I want it off before the crane i hired needs to be returned in the morning.

Just keep prying/jiggling. I guess you have the engine at least resting on the ground or something firm, so grab the box by the extension housing, and jiggle there as you have maximum leverage. Put some wood or similar under it, to prevent it damaging itself when it comes off.

Often the dowels can get really tightly jammed between the bellhousing and the engine. Also, you are prying the gearbox spline out of the clutch, and if there is any wear there, it will get tighter the further you move the gearbox off the clutch plate (i hope that made sense)

Try not to damage the gearbox bellhousing face either, as although it's no water/oil-tight seal, it does do its best to keep out water and dust.

That's my best guess, but I have only seen R154's on JZ's Hope it helps!

agggh it just aint comming are there any snap rings or something holding in the input shaft?? other gearboxes i've removed (fwd ones) have been a little tricky but just slide off the clutch spline eventually

it will slide off, keep pulling, jiggling, and if you can, bung a pry/crowbar in between the box and motor and pull the bastard apart.

Ill chime in and suggest some INOX before Witzl does

hmmm still no luck, when prying i can get the bellhousing a back past the flywheel, but as soon as i let off pressure it closes up again...

the throw out bearing and fork doesn't need to be removed does it?

u will need to remove the pressure plate from the flywheel BEfore jiggle time,
or u'll do what i did and snap your spline cover

14mm socket and a long screw driver wil remove the bolts,
but get a few mates ready to lift that sucker!

Uh, going on memory here there is no way to remove the pressure plate from the flywheel. The bolts go in towards the front of the engine...

lol i feel like an idiot guys,

the only other gearboxes i've worked with slide out of the clutch/pressure plate without removing anything, but as soon as the fork was removed it slid of easily.

most gearboxes dont necessitate a pull type clutch

Ahh, sorry, didnt realise it was a pull type! A lot of cars seem to be coming out pull type these days... what's the advantage?

as far as I know it makes the clutch lighter on the foot even with a heavy pressure plate...but I could be wrong there

I thought that's what hydaulic assist did, as opposed to cable type clutch release.
