Talking Turbocharging a big port 4AGE - suitable head gasket?

    Hey ppl

Ok so I've finally got my ke70 running with a bigport 4age and haltech mgmt system. I have always dreamt of 4agte and I'm finally ready to do it, for under $400.

Ive done my research and I'm pretty across all the core things that need to be done for a 4agte, but I need some specific advice on things like a suitable head gasket to lower the compression ratio + other things to look out for in doing this particular conversion.

My plan is to basically put a thicker head gasket on (1.8mm/2mm?) to drop compression to like 8.7, leave the motor internals and head stock, ram 12psi into it with a T28 and find fortune and glory (150kw would do.. or even 150hp).

I've heard of guys getting over 180kw from a stock big port with a 1.8mm gasket , decent BB turbo and tune. As I'm running a haltech, I can easily retune fuel and ignition parameters so I've got the hardest part sorted.

I'd like to note I am doing this turbo conversion on an extreme budget. I'm talking $50 HKS copy manifold, $50 second hand T25, $50 FMIC etc

    I'm running:
    • 4age big port (standard)
    • 4agze injectors (250-365cc/min, green plug?)
    • Haltech E6A engine mgmt
    • Distributor based ignition (I know i probably should go to direct fire wasted spark with coils. I want to see how the dizzy ign sys hold up first)
    • VL turbo fuel pump (pumping to engine on factory metal fuel lines)
    • factory fuel pressure reg

    Questions
    1. Any recommendations on head gasket? TO be safe I was thinking a HKS 2mm like this HKS 2.0MM METAL HEAD GASKET COROLLA MR-2 4AGE 4AGZE | eBay for $140
    2. I've heard that with over 150hp you need to run 10mm EFI line from tank to fuel rail. I'm using factory metal lines at the moment. Thoughts?
    3. Ignition system is still dizzy (single coil). How do ppl think this will hold up under 12psi? Reckon it could do 150hp?
    4. Is the factory fuel pressure reg good for 150hp? 150kw? Whats the cheapest, dodgiest upgrade? Malapassi? 7mgte?

    Thanks guys!

    Thanks guys!

I can't speak to boost, but in my 150whp 4AGE I'm still using the std GTS fuel line

    1. Yes a 2mm gasket would prob be a good idea, even though i've seen guys run on the stock headgaskets with some reasonable boost and making 190kw atw!!
    2. Stock fuel lines will be sufficient enough, even up to 300hp they should be fine, i would just upgrade the fuel pump.
    3. I would convert to a wasted spark setup dual coil from a 4agze. But the stock ignition is again good enough, just replace the rotor, dizzy cap and leads so they are new items.
    4. Factory FPR i think should be ok, im not sure if its different to a 4agze one....

Thanks for the info guys. Exactly what I needed to hear.

Any more advice on this conversion would be welcomed.

ARP head studs and stock toyota 4agze headgasket = win.

if you want to use a metal HG, make sure both the block and head surfaces are sonic lapped. they need to be smoothe as.

lots of people around the globe have run low, mild and rather high boost set-ups with the stock gze HG with no problems.

i like to have a weak point in a boosted engine, and i would much prefer to swap out a HG than a piston. not saying the gze HG is weak, but it may be a weaker point than say a metal HG.

Agree with Feral. Don't let it detonate and your head gasket will stay in 1 piece. I'd be very much more inclined to spend the money on a decent water injection system than to try and drop the compression ratio.

    4agze injectors (250-365cc/min, green plug?)
Stock Smallport 4AGE are 250cc dark green. They are good for a small turbo (I'd guess sub 120kW atw). The 4AGZE 365cc (orange) are a good upgrade if you aren't using the stock ECU (different impedance). Otherwise 7MGE light greens drop right in and are 315cc.
