I cleaned out as much as i could by hand, then sprayed some degreaser in there (sparingly) to get the rest.

I couldnt actually get it 100% clean (because im not 2 inches tall hehe) but I checked the movement of the plate to make sure it wasnt sticking or catching anywhere, and that was about 6 months ago and its been running fine since.

I was nervous about it aswell, but because I had a spare on hand i was willing to try a bit of degreaser...didnt seem to hurt it any.

P.S. I made sure not to spray any near the temp sensor, it might not have done anything, but better safe than sorry

maybe some carby cleaner (not sure but it sounds like a good idea) just sparingly, i dunno what affect it would have, but should clean it nicely

Theres not really much inside the air tract of an AFM that can be "easily" damaged.
Just make sure nothing runs up into the section under the black cover (the PCB etc.), i.e. don't spray excessively with the thing upside down.

If its a hot wire type (rather than a rotating flap), be careful not to physically hit the hotwire... otherwise you can reasonably easily break it. Otherwise, i believe that carby cleaner is actually the recommended cleaner as it is hydrocarbon based.
