Default beams 6 speeds power levels ?

Anybody have a clue what a beams 6 speed gear box will take Kw wise before it feels sick ? Ie supercharged 1G with 20 psi going to live long ? Assuming the occasional burnout but generally a happy go lucky street car. Also ratios of 5th n 6 th ? Any ideas ?

I'm only guessing, but I reckon they'd take a good 300 ft-lbs or so. They look pretty strong.

Well..... The 6 speed with the BEAMS was actually an AZ6 built by Aisin Industries. It has been used by Mazda (Miata and RX8), Toyota (Altezza), and Nissan (S15). From my research the S15 boys appear to be the crucible for this gearbox, for they are the ones breaking it the most. In fact the S15 guys frequently trade/swap the 6 speed for the 5 speed. As I see it, that makes the gearboxes capability @ about 220#/ft (SR20DET torque)in a 2800#-2900# car.

To quote an older gentleman on a similar question - they'll take a reasonable amount of horespower, a reasonable amount of torque, a fair bit of abuse, or one idiot!

Now of course everyone knows in reality the J160 is crap and you should give it straight to me!

some say there strong other say there weak! like any thing its how u use it, what weight the vechile is, and how much torque its seeing.
ive got one that was behind a 3t turbo making 115rwkw's it got abuse and is still fine.
im soon to remove it and put it behind my 3tc in my ke20, dont think it will ever break there but ill let u know if it does lol

    Gidday

There is a bit on this forum on this issue. I have had a J160 behind my 1gg for a few years now. My car has over 220rwkw and I have had a number of track sessions and I hill climb it. While I do have a noisy bearing that is a result of my supidity as I ran it for some ks without oil.

A bit of research will reveal that the weak link for the box in the 'groove' for 3rd gear - it can clip out with excessive torque. The fix for the S15/RX7/S2000 drivers is to have the groove machined.

I would recommend the bix as the gearing suits my engine and it is smooth and unlike the 58 never lockes you out of a gear.
