    Default 2wd surf

    hi all
having thoughts of building a 2wd surf?
    long term project
    anybody ever done one?
i know i will have to cut a hilux chassis and shorten it 210mm
unless anyone has any better suggestions.
the modplater i normally use told me i can lengthen a chassis but not shorten it
sounds silly to me (i can put two weld beads in it but not one)!
but he is happy if it is neat will still give me a rwc if i dont tell him i did this.
the joy of having 4-5 rwc's with him every week and being easy to get along with
body mounts will have to be moved.
    1uz auto conversion.
any other problems that will pop up?
    thanks all for your thoughts

Why change chassies ? There isnt alot of difference from a surf to a lux chassie in the front end from the quick looks I've had. I bet its all the same (frame rails etc) asside of the bolt on bits I know independant front end 2wd highluxes have been changed to 4wd leaf sprung axle here in shep. Prob alot easyer to strip the surf chassie front end and bolt/weld etc a highlux front suspention bits on. And I assume yout going down in hight so suspention mods would have to be done to a highlux front end anyhow if your going down much.

Short wheel base hilux chassis is the right length, not the easiest things to come by though. You'd just need to move the rear body mounts.

    Or

I've got a mate back home that's done a 2wd surf, there's an easy way. But you'd need both chassises. Cut along the factory weld line in front of the gearbox crossmember on both chassises then weld them together. Plate and weld. Swap over rear leaf spring mounts. I'm pretty sure the 4wd chassis is completely different in front, I'll check and get back to you.

You'll probably get more info on a site like downundertruckin, there's a few surf swaps on there. Or minitruckin.co.nz

I'll try and dig up a couple of links
