Although it's my toy I still want to be able to use it as a daily. With the increase in power from the swap I'm sure it still gunna be heaps of fun!!

They are just as tuff right?

VVTi has more low down power.
Some people have said that the VVTi runs out of puff up top compared to the Non VVTi.

It's going into an '89 Hilux so I'm thinking it will need to run out of puff to hang on to it Not looking for big numbers just a fun ride - don't want to loose the hay out the back..

in that case definitely the vvti. The only time I'd say non vvti is if you were going to swap in a turbo bigger than a GT30, otherwise the vvti will make more power & torque everywhere. My vvti 2j is nice and perky even off boost, which does great things for fuel economy (if you care about that sort of thing)

from a pure cost point of view, id go non vvti, its less complex, and theres a heap of parts about for them, and there cheap.
