anyone had this problem before?
hey
i just put a new timing chain and performance crow cam in my 22re corona
my mate did most of the work he is a qualified mechanic
me and my old man did the valve clearances after putting it back together and running in the cam.
we also timed it up back to stock....
i took it for a hard flex up the road and gave it a bit of shit didnt really feel powerful like before was thinking it was timing?
pull it back up the drive hoped out and gave it a rev now the drive up the road i was gone for all of 3 mins.... when i rev it up and hold it on a rev its knockey....
sounds kinda like a bottom end bearing....? but high in the engine? i check alll the torques and every bolt i have undone and all were perfect....
i then had a though cause i pulled the timing cover off maybe some shit fell into the some? and blocked up the oil pump and got in the oil?
i quickly changed the oil and not much rndom crap came out... oil was weird but then relised that was the cam greese in the oil.....
i out it all back togeather but left the rocker cover loose... started it up no noise when i reved it thoiugh it was sweet....
tightened the rocker cover up and was idling for about 5 mins while i checked stuff...
i gave it a rev and rattling back? wtf?
bottom end bearing usually rattle when cold? true?
when hot ish they will uaually quieten up....?
i had a look around on the fourm's and people are saying that the old rocker cover gasket seams to flatten out and the rockers hit the cover... sound right? there isnt any marks on the rocker cover?
what do you guys think???
anyone had this problem before?
so it goes quiet with the rocker cover loose?

id imagine thats you problem. if you got a vrs set you should have got a new gasket with it, just put some goo on it if you worried about it leaking and do it up to the stock torque
there is no marks on the cover though?
and no i didnt get a rocker cover gasket in my set
im also gonna putt the rockers off and check the torques on the cam... i have a suspision this maybe loose.........
+2 on rocker cover nut too tight
Happens all the time
so it goes quiet with the rocker cover loose? tighten it up and it rattles? thats the problem then
1983 Toyota Celica Supra
it did but i only did a 5 min check... im gooing to investigate it a bit more tomorrow... what is stumping me is there is no marks on the rocker cover from the rockers hitting it....
also i have put a hot cam n so that would mean the rockers are coming up higher than before to and hitting the cover...
like i said ill investigate it tomorrow....
ok so i chnged the rocker cover gastet and that didnt fix the problem
i then cracked the shits and decided to check the cam it seamed tight when bolted down with ouit the rocker cover assy on
i then removed the performance cam and put the stock one bak it.... seamed alot looser and i could turn it with my hand quiet easy...
i assembled it all and started it up run fine did the timing no knocking then i check a few things and gave it a rev once up to operatng temp...... KNOCKING is back
im gonna check the oil presure tomorrow butim sure its not this i have no idea where to look next i need tis car running asap!!![]()
anyone got any ideas??
is it a solid knock or more of a metallic tapping sound
1983 Toyota Celica Supra
metallic tapping sound....
only does it once at operating temp and at about 3 grand.....
gets louder if you drive i not thrashing it.
turn it off let it cool down start it again not there at all untill it gets to operating temp.....
oil presure light isnt on at all not even n first start up.
nothing to do with the front pullys? make any difference putting clutch in or out?
1983 Toyota Celica Supra
havent check putting clutch in... or checked pulleys ....... wouldnt think pulleys would make a difference once it heats up?
just remembered my dad mad me take the belt off and runn the motor to eliminate the pulleys and it didnt make any difference....
