    Wink KE70 Engine Conversion

    Hi guys,

so i have just got my hands on a ke70 and like many others i am thinking about turboing. i have read other topics and turboing a carby it comes with alot of issues.

so just wondering if any one can give some ideas into some engines that would be good for power and maybe turbo

had thought about a G13b there out of a suzuki swift. turbod one when i owned it went hard did beat stock 34 skylines and 180's but unsure if a front wheel drive engine will work and if it would be a good idea.

another thing is money dont want to spend shit loads as it is an old car but i would like to spend some and make it fun.

    thanks Andy

unless you are mych better on the tools than i think then you wont be turboing anything on the cheap.

best bang for buck engine conversion would be a CA18DET, and funnily enough i have one for sale have a bit of a snoop around and you will find that there are many people who have put all sorts of engines into KE70's before.

Serious question Andy, what's your budget?
I'm slowly in the process of dumping a CA18DET into my KE70. For the motor, mounts, gearbox, car, rust repairs, manual pedal box etc etc I'm already up to maybe $3,000 or so. By the end including brakes, suspension, and cosmetic junk, I'll be lucky to see change from $10,000 (bearing in mind it will all be done properly, with certificate).

Slapping on a turbo (or SC12 supercharger) to the 4K will be a much cheaper option, they run relatively low compression to begin with, with the carby you are limited to suck or blow through setups. I don't know a lot, other then that one setup allows an intercooler to be run meaning higher boost.
Even if you manage to turbo/SC the motor, the diff and gearbox will most likely die a horrible death. I have seen guys get away with 100rwkW but for the money they spent you could almost look at a completely different motor.
A few guys across various forums have sold their KE70 complete drive lines for anything between $3-10,000. (SR20's, CA18DET's, even 4AGTE's).

It really depends on your budget, but if you have enough I would just find one already completed. There's a guy local to me selling his KE70 w/ 4AGTE for $9,000. Has good suspension, is engineered, respray etc etc.
If your low on cash, slap on a turbo and cross your fingers.

could just go 4AGE, 4A's came in E71's so fitment (ie using factory bits) should be easy as

CA's are great, but old and without rebuilding them they're very very likely to give you dramas soon after the conversion. seen quite a few people give in to them, silvias and pulsars though

blow through/suck through turbo setups can be made to work good, but they need a fair lot of patience in setup and ongoing maintenance so beware of going that way

if i ever had my time as a P plater again id have an AE71 with a sneaky blacktop, would be killer! a hell of a daily too

well most people are suggesting either a sr20 or a ca18 just like foamy said you have to have custom engine mounts and gearbox mount custom tail shaft, although power to weight ratio would be insane and alot of fun.

trdee: how much are you selling your engine for and is it complete engine ?

i have seen some other guys useing a rb20 box reason for this is ? stronger ?

$1500 for complete engine/gearbox/drivetrain setup out of my silvia. Apparently freshly rebuilt by the previous owner but you're welcome to do your own compression test etc. Is still in the car and running so you can test drive it too if you want. I'm taking it out as im doing an altogether more adventurous engine conversion into the silvia

That being said, do you have experience with this kinda stuff before? I'm not exactly super experienced or anything, but I know enough to be able to say that engine conversions, especially from one maker to another, are never easy or cheap. The swap im doing into the silvia is going perfectly atm though lol, but still, it's budgeted for 8k........

Have a look on AE86DC forums, there's a guy in QLD who sells custom engine and gearbox mounts.
