A few things I would mention as well that may contribute.

I did cut the A/C Belt (as it had oil on it) and the idler pulley was quite noisy just before going for a drive.

A few things that came to mind could be loose flywheel? (even though i torqued and loctited them on)

This was the same issue as earlier post, but the noise ended up being something loose the first time

just throwing it out there, hows the turbo condition? obviously the motor was second hand when you did the conversion? the bearing in that could be on the way out, if you lost oil before with the filter. the turbo being external oil feed would have suffered damage quicker than internal bearings. does the turbo oil feed comes out of the filter housing on them? i can't remember. Or you could have a lot of slop in it causing the impeller to maybe touch the housing walls.

I can't hear the sound grab as work computer no audio. So its just a guess

    maybe something to look at?

Thats an interesting one actually, the turbo seems to be in good condition. I was wondering if it might have been due to the oil starvation that the turbo may have gone.

I have to check if the turbo feed comes out of the filter housing, it could well be the issue. Maybe the bearing had been quite noisy. I will take off the intake pipe and check. The other thing is if the exhaust side.

I did notice 1 thing, the top of the CT20B had a tiny hole in the top of the casing, I will get a pin to see if it goes straight through. Maybe somehow the exhaust wheel has hit the

The wierd thing is that it was still boosting ok too, it was making some decent noise on deceleration like something was hitting

Thanks for the info. Much appreciated

if they exhaust wheel has hit you would have bent or broken fins and it wouldn't be boosting all that well. take the intake off spin the impeller, move it side to side up and down back and forth to check the condition of the bearing.

I am still trying to find the time to check out the car, which will probably be on the weekend. The annoying part is that someone is very interested in my spare 3sgte, so i'm not sure whether to keep it yet. I am soooo hoping its something rattling around (hopefully not internals)

It actually doesnt sound like spun bearing noise - if its that loud at small revs it will be loud at idel too. Take the cam covers off and timing case cover and see whats gong on dude. + 7 for checkin with stethoscope to narrow down further

That would be good if it wasn't spun bearing. I will have a proper look, I was wondering if the starter motor was loose, maybe it was extended out. I will take off the cam cover off this weekend too.

    Thanks again

    What is a 'proper look'????????????????
Your guesses have been all over the place & making little to no reason.
Stop it & find someone that at least can make an educated guess.
    Good luck.

    Point taken thanks for that

Proper meaning I haven't been able to look apart from the first day it happened (which was just an auditable listen). I will be heading to where the car is located over the weekend.

    Thanks all

fuck me, I wouldn't be even considering driving or running that motor with a sound like that.

Do all the static test you can, e.g. cam cover off and inspect shims/valves/cams, pull plugs and inspect them and the bores/piston tops, dump oil and look for bits of bearing, manually rotate crank with no plugs and check for even movement thru the rotation, pull the oil sensor and check is working, inspect the oil in the supply gallery at pressure sensor, sump (finger up inside sump if possible), head. Rotate crank so each piston is at TDC and then see if you can push the slug downwards.

A turbo sound would sound like metal on metal at very high speeds - that 's a heavy-ish rattle.

Drop the oil to check for bearings. silver chunks = bad. I dont reckon it is though, it still idles ok by the sounds of it

    Then look for exhaust leaks

Doesn't sound like a bearing, not constant enough.

It sounds like something is loose and rattling, it only occurs when you rev it

Yeah. Adrian, did you dump the oil and change filter ad cut it up to see what came out when i spoke to you a few weeks ago?
take the cam covers and timing covers off.
    Look for:
cam clearances, possible loose cam caps, anything funky up top, cam gears are bolted up to torque
Check timing belt (both condition and timing - you should have put a new belt in and done the front and rear seals when the thing was out of the car)
Check oil pump, water pump and idler pulleys/bearing etc
Pull plugs and check rotation as Chuck suggested. If its hitting valves you'll be able to tell. also inspect the tops of the pistons if possible with torch.
    Borescope available anyone?

Good luck chief. I have an exam to study for this weekend but can help next weekend.

Since this is a day for throwing out random things with no real idea (one of my areas of expertise).

I had a similar noise many years ago when one of the baffles in a front muffler worked loose. Nothing noticable at idle, but even under a light load it would start to make rattly noises. However, that always ended up with the baffle shifting entirely and blocking the exhaust, much power loss.

Please do let us know when you pin point the problem.
