Default sprinter vs celica rear ends

    Hi all,

i have been looking around all day looking for answers, and found snippets here and there....

How similar are the rear end set ups of a ra celica and a ae86 sprinter?

i saw techno toy tuning have adjustable upper and lower trailing arms for ae86...

also have a rear coilover conversion that is supposed to be bolt in.

    Cheers

I have put a BC coil over kit from an AE86 in to the rear of my RA23, the only thing is that the spring perches on the diff are not quite big enough.

The spring has an adjustable collet, with a separate adjustable shock
The front end I just made up a different top plate to suit

Fuck those thing hey. Badly designed (thought out?) garbage.
Buy the the 50-50 "STREER" (street?) ones here. BTW BV never used to sell the rod end-rod end ones up until recently. Probably because people think those ones are better because they're more direct or something.
If you must have rod end-rod end ones, just make them up yourself. Buy two of these, two that are shorter for upper arms and 4 3/4 16tpi LH and 4 3/416tpi RH rod ends. Get the rod end spacers made locally. It'll work out to less than half the price of the T3 stuff.

For rear coilovers, have you had a look at AJPS's height adjustable perches?

I dunno if they'll fit your car but you could ask him about it.

    Thanks for the links...

The ajps setup looks good - i have contacted them.

Gabe at t3 tells me there are differences in the rear arms between the ae86 and the ra28... so not sure on grabbing of the shelf ae86 arms.
What is your dislikes about the t3 arms? just the fact they have rods ends both ends?

Thanks again for the info guys...

Rod end/rod end arms cause the chassis to crack/tear at the trailing link mounts. Not becuase they're more harsh or anything but because of the design of the rear end. If you put in solids the diff will move freely in ride(up and down) motion but will bind in roll. It's either the diff housing that's going to twist or the chassis that's going to deflect and eventually break welds/tear the metal. It's made worse if you have soft springs and the car rolls a lot more than a drift car with super high roll rates which barely has any movement in the suspension anyway.

Edit: macdonald racing make m12 bushed rod ends, mcgill motorsport sell m12 threaded lh/rh threaded tubes if you want to make your own bush/rod end stuff. Or get a machinist to make some stuff up for you using bigger rod ends. I bought stuff to make arms for silvia and he laughed at me for paying too much.

thanks for taking the time for a detailed reply. That all makes sense. but i had assumed that the spherical bearing in the rod end would allow for side to side roll? till it hit the limit of its movement anyway....

I wrote that quickly on my ipod so it's not very detailed which is why I think you missed the point I was trying to get at. I wrote a huge reply one time on ae86dc explaining why it binds but I can't find it. It has nothing to do with the rod end's range of motion, it's to do with the 4 link geometry.

Aaaand I found it. Rose Jointed suspension parts [Archive] - AE86 Driving Club That one should explain it in enough detail.

There's another thread that popped up today.

Thanks again for that stuff - all makes sense now!!!!

Should have converted to equal length when i was playing with body stuff...

Now to talk to BV and see if they fit my car as well as an ae86????

Yeah, you really need to think about it before it makes sense. I couldn't be bothered writing it out off my iPod so I thought I'd post it up later off the computer.

Go measure your arms and tell me what length they are. I'll try measure ae86 ones today and tell you how long they are. Just end to end becuase I'm nit taking them off the car to measure centre to centre.

    the arms are -
bolt centre to bolt centre - 480mm
    end to end - 530mm
    bolt diameter - M14
width where bush is pressed into the end - 39mm

mine are still in the car as well....
