Is this the engine that is almost famous for breaking its guide/s and taking out the chain & sprocket & cam & timing cover?
Hi Everyone!
I have a '74 Ta22 running the stock 1.6ltr engine. The problem is that the timing chain is really noisy. Is there any way to adjust this? Or does anyone know how the tensioner works or replaced the timing chain and guides before?
Thankssss.

Any engine rebuild shop will be able to supply new chain, they cut it to length while you wait. Finding the guides can be done, or you can have the faces rebonded. It all means you will have to pull the timing cover off to do the replacement.
From memory there is no adjustment externally, you may get some adjustment by realigning the guides, to do that you have to pull the cover off, so you may as well replace the shagged parts.
cheers Chuck.

yeah agreed if your in there you may aswell replace it, you can actually buy a timing chain kit they still have them around i got one for my mates 18r and i remember seing the kits for the 2t still so parts arent hard to find, dont be worried cause the kit will come with some fitting instructions so you should be right
Hi Genna.
I am surprised that the rather short, in comparison to a lot of motors, only chain in a 2T is streatched so much that it rattles. For it to be that stretched the motor would be running very rough due to variations in ignition timing and cam timing.
Does it rattle when the engine is first started and the oil light has not gone out?
Does it rattle when the engine is at running temp and is idling? Does the oil light come on at idle?
Does it still rattle when moving off from idle?
Have you checked your valve clearances?
Check these things before pulling off the timing cover as the sound may not be the chain.

I have two '74 TA22s, both with "well used" 2T stock motors, and both produce a fair bit of engine rattle on start-up. I had been assuming that this was timing chain, and have picked up some replacement kits which I was planning to fit at some stage. I would be interested to know what other possible causes there could be for engine rattle on start up.
One tip I picked up a while back is that the 2T motors need an oil filter with an anti-drain back valve fitted (Toyota genuine and Ryco units have this). Without the right filter, the 2T takes quite a while to come up to full oil pressure, and will rattle quite a bit on start-up. But my two old girls both still rattle for around 5 seconds even with the correct filter fitted.

Hi,
The proper Toyota oil filters are the best to use. They get up to pressure quicker than other filters. For a few dollars more they are worth every cent to ensure better oil delivery on start up.
Anyone who values their 2T/2T-G and 18R/18R-G engines use Toyota filters.
