Default 20V ST blowing clouds of black smoke

    Hi All,

I bought a AE92 with a 20V ST & standard ECU a while back as a project & to use as a daily runner. My priorities have changed & she will be up for sale shortly, but before I think about advertising I want to fix the black smoke problem it has.

To describe the issue, when you start it up it idles at about 500rpm & little puffs of black smoke come out the exhaust. It seems to be ok up until 2.5k rpm but from there and above it charfs out clouds & clouds of black smoke.

Being black smoke (not blue), im obviously chasing an overfueling issue....

At first I thought it was going to be a faulty fuel pressure regulator so I bought a new one, but that did nothing.

Now im guessing it could be air flow meter (as it looks like the black cap has been off some time in the past)??? But im really just guessing now.

Has any one experianced similar issues (and resolved them??) or does anyone know how I can test the AFM???

    Any idaea/help is muchly appreciated.

    cheers.

The previous owner of my Silvertop had "clicked" the AFM to lean it a bit. Perhaps yours has been clicked to richen it.
500 RPM is too low for base idle. That could be to do with the AFM or the ISCV (or a number of other things like throttle stop etc)
Does it run stock ECU and management?
Black smoke could be fuxored injectors too.

First thing I'd look at is the AFM. Swap the AFM over with a mate (if possible) and reset the computer and see how it goes.

Almost certainly AFM (if the S/T has one) or coolant temp sensor.

Could also be an air leak somewhere but not likely this bad on a non-turbo car.

You should run diags on it, the ecu will almost certainly report an error code if it's as bad as you say!

Some Camrys and celicas have an afm that is doable with some tweaks. There was information on twincam.org about it if not on here.
