    Default Strange Tyre Happenings

Anyone ever heard of a tyre bulging or ballooning all of a sudden, last friday left work in my 2wd Hilux got up to 100ks on ipswich rd- oops 90ks- and i felt a bad vibration, turned out to be the left hand rear tyre bulged on the tread, the tyre is a quality brand Goodyear Cargo G26 from a Falcon ute and has plenty of tread left, pressure was about 34psi, WTF......

    Hi,

It can be from a manufacturing weakness that shows itself after some road use.

I just can't understand why after months and months of use, i bought them 2nd hand so they probly had a year or more on them already, i had just done a rotation from front to rear only 2weeks ago so i know it wasn't egg shaped when it was on the front, I just don't understand.

Or what's known as an impact fracture from either striking a pothole or even just driving up or against a gutter can damage the cords and belts in the case, sometimes can take some time for the problem to become obvious.

I used to use Goodyear light truck radials on my Holden one tonner. I had 2 failures . One was a blowout.
The other vibrated and I insisted on a wheel balance and it was found to have tread separated.
both times the dealer made allowance for the defective tyres and I did not pay full price for replacements.
The last pair of Light Truck Radials I bought were HOPELESS in the wet . I could steer but not brake as they would instantly lock up under any braking. I took them back in disgust and bought NCTs to replace them. The dealer gave me a trade in . I had been using that brand for years without problems in the wet but this pair were hopeless.

Its called tread belt separation and can be caused by several things. It will happpen if a tyre has been overloaded with not enough air in it so it runs hot. it can happen from exceeding the speed rating of the tyre. It can happen from hitting potholes or rocks and it can happen after having a puncture that has cut some of the belts or let air inbetween the layers of tread belts.

These goodyears were very expensive when the first bloke bought em and i have been told since from tyre guys that they are a good tyre, with this info i have always had them on the steer, got cheap Nankangs on the drive, but when i recently rotated the goodyears to the drive, i found them to have nowhere near the same traction as the cheapys and they are shit in the wet aswell.

The steel or polyester bands in the rubber break hence the bulge.

I've had this happen three times and the third one was the second tyre which was replaced under warranty.

If you haven't had it long take the tyre back though I would have to agree with it being an issue with the construction of the tyre.

Stocker i wish i could take it back but i bought them second hand, and without a receipt i doubt any tyre place would warrant it.
