    Default engine mounts: 12r - 18rg swap

I'm sure this will be pretty straightforward, but thought I'd ask.

Swapping from 12R to 18RG, are there factory mounts I can use that will do the job? The standard 12R mounted like this:

Must.... avoid.... urge... to... upgrade... parts I haven't.... used.... yet.....

Looks to be extremely close to this, which is supposed to be an 18RG celica engine bay:

Have you tried bolting the mounts off the 12R onto the 18RG?

I don't have the car/engine/old engine together at the moment, hence my asking! If it's known what combo I need then I can order new rubbers etc before I go to do it so it all goes together in one go.

I'd expect that the 18R mounts would bolt straight to the 12R crossmember as this ute was sold here with a 12R but in the states with an 18R.

Also, it looks like I'm going to need the 12R sump on the 18RG, if that's doable... the sumps look to be in a different place.

The mounts do not swap, haven't tried the sump though. The crossmembers on the Celica's do look the right angle, but it is the width at the mounts that is different, as I've told you before I believe I have a pair of factory mounts that sit the 18R right, but they are very rare and I haven't put my cab on to see if the 18R is going to be rubbing up against it yet

I'm going to see if I can source a set of mounts from an 18R RN1x from the states. Assuming the crossmembers are the same that should allow a straight bolt-in.

I have done this mod in the States. the engine mounts do not line up. You also need a huge hammer to fit the tranny in the tunnel. There are several other minor issues like a tranny mount too. nothing is there so you are on your own to fab one up.

Hi mate, thanks for your reply. That looks fantastic & is quite similar to what I'm going for

If you're not a regular on here, have you got an email address? I'd be interested to swap details / ideas / pictures.

Hard to tell from the picture, but that looks like a Corona... what model is it?

Out of interest what mounts did you actually try that didn't line up... 8R mounts or 12R mounts?

I am not sure about the 12R but if it is the same as the 8 or 18R, you are OK. just a bolt in job.

    12R -> 18R isn't a direct swap.

However, I'm hoping that I can source a set of brackets from the 1969-1972 (RN1x) Hilux/Pickup that came with the 18R in the US... as this will allow a bolt-in (ie. 18R->18R).

    Hey Shifty

The standard 18RG celica engine bay looks almost identical to the 12r corona setup with respect to the forward rounded crossmember. That celica you have in the 2nd picture has modified steering and suspension (unless the later model GT's came with rack and pinion ??) ie. dont worry too much about the sump, most 18r sumps are mid-rear to suit.

When we tried this on a RT81 corona, the 18R engine mounts interfered with the curved chassis rails by ~10mm either side. Good luck with the hilux parts, i'm interested to see the results.
