These are ebay bearings. I colloquially call them all linear bearings...
I won't be using linear actuators due to cost, rather I'll use stepper motors driving the acme style rods.

It will get as much use as I can think of things to make . The bearings from ebay are cheap so I'll just swap them with new ebay ones as they wear out.

This looks good... subscribed for prosperity. If you could throw up links to the parts you are getting, that would be fantastic. Your design sounds quite robust, so as long as you can get the frame stiff and prevent it being prone to twisting, then you should have teh wiener!!

Interesting on the HALO armour... could look good at certain events, but I wouldn't recommend wearing it down the shops

Once I have a proper sized shed set up, something like this would be great to make - and it'll be just like buying a TIG... everyone will tell you that you won't have enough use to make it worthwhile buying/building before the fact, then once its operational you will get so much use out of it and have so many people wanting you to do little jobs for them, that it'll be a worry how quick it might wear out!!

Yea, 'what are you getting one of those for, you'll never use it...'

Then you get it and you are to busy using it for other people to do anything for yourself...

I reckon the CNC will be pretty solid with the design I'm building. Just gotta make sure it ends up square...
I'll start a dedicated thread once I have a bit more to show. I have an AE101 GZE Levin to build first.
A mate and I are building a suit of armour each, just because Halo is awesome and walking into Maccas and ordering a big mac as Master Chief will be awesome to do once. I'll be able to strike it off my list of things to do before I die and move down the list to 'table dancing with a drunk shemale hooker in a seedy Taiwan bar.....'

I forgot that people go to a lot of effort to do weird shit in the big smoke... up here people just get drunk in their normal clothes, they don't need special suits to do stupid shit

You could re-enact Red Vs Blue... an AE101 may pass off as a Warthog...

We've got a Sera with a bodykit too for that futuristic touch.

I think it's the fluoride in the water that does it.....

Diycnc and cnczone should help too
Also look up gingery lathes and mills if you want to build your own
I am currently building a foundry to cast my own bits

Hmmm, seem to have gone awal, but ebay had some chinese looking hobby mill/lathe combo's for about $1500. Wouldn't do steel but perspex would be easy and maybe aluminium if you push it.

We're just getting an acme screw in at the moment actually to drive an oxy cutting torch, was something like $100/m or less (cheap). Do they have the precision you need?

www.sdp-si.com is a great place to source bearings, gears, precision shafts and all sorts of threaded rods. Prices arn't bad, you might just have to check which size of each type of part is cheapest and build your design around it.

If your worried about the luminlab kits having plastic parts, purchase one, then for the first CNC job, make aluminium parts to replace the plastic parts using the CNC kit . I have a mate who has just bought one of these, when it gets it up and running, I'll let you know how it handles various jobs.

I'm looking to upgrade to 5D in the future, can the lumilabs be upgraded? What's the size of the table? Mine will be 25" x 25" x about 6", big enough for gearbox adapter plates etc.

Moar links to check out. Will see what they've got.
