Hey it's all vauge memories from materials engineering at uni, I'm happy when I get taught something

So the type of grain in the cast in the bit where the steering arm should be strong enough to hold this together properly?

All I would have thought in the ideal world you'd want the blank casting to include the basic hole pattern and thick edges around them, getting the grain aligned in the stress areas.

at least they tried something different, and no real reason why it would not be good, apart from weight... but not everywhere in the world has Sydney potholes

you mean columnar grains right? and cast structures, particularly steering knuckles, are not always what you would call "brittle". in this case you would classify them as "tough"
