Muffler recommendation for 3T GTE??

Hi,
For those that know my car, I currently have a 3T GTE with full 3 inch exhaust with only one straight through Genie Turbo muffler.

I rarely drive my TA22 now, but when I do I now find the exhaust is just too load! Maybe I'm just getting old...

Any recommendations for a 3 inch stainless muffler? Ideally I prefer something thats still straight through and not too long or bulky.
The current muffler is only 4 inches high so it fits perfectly under the car....

What have you guys used on your 3T GTE's?

i always ran a full 2.5 inch mild steel exhaust with a single high flow/stright through 2.5 muffler at the rear. db tested at 94db. and i never had any lack of power even when i had the to4e on there. i always thought 3 inch was just too big for a 1.8. like ive got a 3 inch on my 2.5 litre turbo. that is just my opinion though. you have had yours alot longer then me

Yeah, 3 inch maybe too big, not sure with my set up given I have the GT25 BB Turbo and now also planning a rebuild which includes more boost, aiming to run between 18 and 20 psi....

I made my own 3 inch s/s mandrel bent exhaust, it took a bit of time so I'm not planning to do it again given how well it fits. Maybe I'll go for an offset type muffler which will have a bit more restriction but being 3 inch it shouldn't make much difference....

You could always add either a hotdog/resonator or a straight through mid muffler.. the bigger it is the more it will bring your DBs down, and if you want to bring it down further you could add a couple bends along the way.

As for exhaust sizes it should be ok with 3" although in theory it would be better to go from 3" at the front down to 2 3/4" or even 2 1/2" around half way. the principal is as the exhaust gases flow down the exhuast they cool down, and as they cool down they become more dense and slow down as well, the slowing down can cause some turbulence which interupts the flow. By reducing the exhaust diameter you keep the exhaust velocity up and its more free flowing.

Thanks, I just want to hear a nice note under acceleration without the constant noise level I get now.

Problem is there are so many options to try, but hearing from people that have already done this would save a heap of time....

Few years back I did have a hot dog and an offset muffler at the rear that did have a descent note and wasn't too loud, but when it came time to replacing it I went for a straight through muffler to have less restriction. the problem was the straight through just made it so loud and annoying.

A friend of mine with a r33 skyline used to have a set-up like yours, 3" all the way with just one straight through muffler, and that was louder than most skylines out there. now he's replaced it with another 3" but with a mid muffler/resontor and a rear muffler. Both straight through but both very large so has a greater capacity to drain the noise out, plus has has 2 90 degree bends, and now its unbelievably quiet although it does feel like he possibly has some power.

There are many options and depends how much noise you want to cut out. imo add a straight through mid muffler/resonator and that will quieten it down and take away the droning noise if it does do that.

you should take it to Craig at Extreme Custom Engineering Archerfield....

if you want proper magnaflow gear he can get ahold of anything as he is a rep lots of different brands and types of mufflers, he will be able to suggest something for you..

Even though Im running a sr20det in my 28, I have a 3inchexhaust from turbo to under the back seat area, then dropped to 2 1/2 inch from there back with only one muffler at the rear(2 1/2) and the high flow cat(3') up front.
It seams fairly good,and have been told the same about the gasses cooling.
Just my opinion.

All the benefits of a straight through muffler, with the abitlity to set the note/volume you like. Cost $510 in total (talked the guys down ) and should help make the work car a bit of a sleeper.

That looks interesting....Do they recommend just running this muffler at the rear?

If so, perhaps I could just replace the Genie trubo muffler I have now and like you say I could have load and quiet...very cool.

Or I could just fit a hot dog resonator up front to hopefully reduce the noise...

Not sure but I don't think so going off the u tube video's I have viewed. There is one of a near storck WRX with just a cat and a varex muffler, providing quiter than stock operation when in full silent mode. There is also one of a worked RX7, shows the HUGE difference in noise The shop I brought it from up hear are the only NT supplier and are known idiots; (seen an example with 4 cats installed in an exhaust system with no mufflers!) but they said for a 4-6 cylinder you only need one, and with a V8 you will require 2. Good info huh?

So I would dare say no, but shoot your local guys an email to be sure.

Im doing this as a bit of an experiment on my workcar, to see if it would be any good performance wise for the 18RGTE I have been getting together. The Daily is an SV21 Camry stationwagon , with just a 3SGE, Genie extractors, 2.5 exhaust, Microtech lts10s, 4 Bosch ignition coils, Sard FPR and a few other bits and pieces. Its NA at the moment (got a GTE head for it but focusing $$$ on the RG for now ), so should be a good test noise wise as it doesnt have a turbine in the exhaust path.

Will be a while till its fitted and tested, will let you know how I go if you like
