Question 7M ARP Head Studs - Which socket to use?!

    Hi all,

I've got a 7m-gte on an engine stand, begging to be slipped into my Cressida with a manual box.

the engine in question has already has an MHG installed, with ARP studs. I was going to take the head off to have a look in the bores and see if they seemed alright, but I can't find a bloody socket that bloody fits the bloody studs.

The studs are a 14mm and have a 12 point head - easy right?

12 point 14mm normal socket - too shallow.

12 point 14mm deep socket - not enough clearance around the stud to accomodate the full socket. The "shaft" of the socket(s) foul on bits of the actual head itself, so I can't get a clean "grip" on the studs.

What tools have people used on these studs before?
It seems to need very thin walls.

have tried a few from supercheap/repco/burson, borrowed a few different ones from mates, but none seem to do the trick

    Any help much appreciated

I used the kincrome 3/8 drive deep socket. It was a snug fit but worked well.

Another thing with the ARP studs in a 7M head. Make sure you drop the washers in place before you fit the studs.

Washers wont go in when the studs are already fitted.

I used a deep 3/8 socket that had a small amount of love around the outside with a grinder,

hmmm, slight spanner in the works (har har har)

kinchrome 3/8" is now the same external size as the 1/2". Tool shop man said kinchrome have recently changed some of their products - he reckons they're stronger now, but also slightly larger.

I guess I'll see what 3/8" sockets I can get my hands on, and maybe give it some Stitty grinder love too.

Another option is to ask very nicely if I can borrow someone's suitable socket
