    Default 3TGTE Cam timing

    Hey guys,

i have recently brought a 3TGTE and received it in peices, currently putting the engine back together with fresh bits, was wondering how to set up the correct cam timing with the crank to put the timing chain back on the engine, theres the pins on the cams that the gears slot onto, so i need to know what hole the pins go into and what hole in the gear goes onto the cam, also would like to know where the cams have to line up with the knoches that are on the cam gears..

I hope someone can help me out, as im stressing heaps about it, haha\

    Thanks,
    Sam

    Sam,
On the end of each cam you will see a notch cut out (at the chain end), these notches must be directly on top when the crank is at TDC.

There is a special tool for this, BUT I usually rest a steel ruler on top of the notch to give a better indictation of the angle of the cam.
Fine adjustments of the cam are done by removing the pin and rotating slightly to fit in another hole.

    Hope this helps,
    Simon

    Thanks for the reply Simon.

so your saying the notch on the cam gear or on the actually cam shaft? because when i got the engine the cam gears were off the cams and the pin was out too, so to get the cam gear onto the right hole with the pin is my next question. if that makes scene?

Thanks again for you help mate, im really stuck on this,

    Sam

You just have to keep turning the cam gear until you can get the holes to line up to put the pin in. Bare in mind you only have a few degrees tolerance before you bend valves so be sure it's right before you turn over the motor. Always turn it over by hand before using the starter motor. An ex forum member bent 6 valves in my 3tgte because he set the cams at 12 degrees before tdc not tdc. I've setup yamaha dohc cams a few times now. It just takes practice

    Good luck

    Sam,
The notch is on the end of the cam, not the cam gear. Its a vut out about 3mm wide and located where the front bearing sits on each cam.
I'll have to find a pic and send it to yo

I think 2tg and 3tgte must have more or less the same head design and this will help you understand what Simon and lilcrash is describing.
One significant tip though: do NOT turn the crankshaft if you have already put in the head the camshafts. First take off the camshafs, then turn the crankshaft till it reaches the TDC, after put the 2 camshaft as in the picture with the notches on top and then continue the assembly. Also when you try to put the camgear and especially when you try to insert the pin to the right hole it will be wise to put a piece of cloth in between the camgears and chain so if the pin drops (it is so easy to drop believe me) it will not drop inside the engine. Ones the pins are on their holes you can take off the cloth. You have to tighten the chain and then to turn by hand the crank few times to make sure when it is in the TDC the notches sill are on top. If for any reason you find even a small resistance when you turn the crank (assuming you dont have any sparkplugs on the head in order not to have any compression when you turn the crank)you have done something wrong. Good luck !!!

Ans also if this helps you in some way:

Thanks for all the help guys! your all legends. ill have to have a look at the marks on the cam when i get home, i remember looking at these marks, but didn't think much of it. also i'm not totally sure about the intake side cam because it has the gear to run the dizzy off, unlike the 2tgeu.
