Hi all and greetings from mkiiisupra.net

Earlier this year I 'rescued' a narrowbody Ga70 auto which had lain neglected in a corner of a yard for several years. I'm gradually bringing it back to roadworthy condition, and having owned a UK spec 7M-GE for nearly 4 years I'm not a newbie to the type.

What is new to me is the 1G-GTE motor. As the Ga was never an official import over here, parts and information can be hard to come by. It's certainly not recognised by any Toyota dealer I've visited. There are a few examples on mkiiisupra, but my understanding is that the 1G is a popular motor in Australia. Any advice or guidance you guys could give would be really appreciated.

    Bob.

    G'day Bob welcome to Toymods,

Yeah the 1G is a good little motor though a little asthmatic is a heavy supra. Plenty of guys here use them in early celicas. I had one in a RA28 and they are fantastic in that size car.

Like you guys, we never got the GA70's here, in fact I think they were for JDM only. The only car we ever recieved with a 1G is the Lexus IS200 which has a 1G-FE.

Probably best to ask any questions you might have in the tech section otherwise join the classic celica thread. There is a wealth of knowledge there about 1G's

Hope it all goes well for you. It can be difficult owning a "special" car but this one shouldn't be too difficult for you to get right.

    Thanks for the welcome.

You're spot on, the 1G was for JDM only. Lacking slightly in torque compared to my n/a 7M (180 lb/ft vs 196 lb/ft) but slightly more poke (210 bhp vs 201 bhp without cat fitted), factory figures. Some people slate them as underpowered over here, especially with the autobox, but I like to be different.

I had it running earlier, replacement engine sounds much better than the original. Maybe something to do with no rod knock! The plan at the moment is to strip the sick 1G apart and rebuild if possible with an eye to a modest power increase. An overhaul gasket set and a set of main and big end bearings would be a good start.

I'm going to the main Jap car show of the year here in the UK this weekend, JAE. Any requests for pics of specific types?

Be careful with the rebuild kits, there are a few small differences between early and late 1G's, big end bearing sizes for one. I think bearings are getting a little hard to come by for one of them (not sure which one.....) Plus you may need oversized bearings to fix that knock. They are all matched to the crank anyway so when you order them they will ask you for a size. I think they are stamped on the bearing.

My stock 1G-GTE pushed 150kW at the wheels and mid 13 second 1/4 mile (400m) in a RA28 so they are no slouch of a motor. They need about 14psi boost to get any life out of them though.

As for the car show, if you take pics and feel like posting them, it would be great to see them in either the "Picture Thread for all Toyotas" LINK or make a new thread in the "General Car Talk" forum for all to enjoy.

Have a great weekend and good luck with the supra build.

If you feel inspired, start a build thread in the Forum Members Rides area. Give it a title with GA70 written somewhere and I am sure it will attract a few knowledgeable people to your cause.

I'll see what I can find. Got a feeling they're on a par with hens teeth and rocking horse poo over here!

hi bob mate, only just noticed you're a member on here too
i've found loads of useful info on our beloved 1G-GTE's including a source for CT12 turbo rebuild kits, i tried everywhere here in the UK and nobody does 'em!
Remembering that 1G's need love too!
