As a test method run a wire from your battery to the starter. If it works you starter relay might be dying
hey guys, i have a 1988 hilux that is my project car at the moment. The battery terminals are buggered but when i go to start the car it makes a tick noise but the starter motor doesn't actually turn over. all the indicators and wipers ect. work, just doesn't turn over. i have bought new terminals but is that the problem? seems a bit weird seeming the other electrical stuff is fine. or is it my starter motor? cheers.

Looking for a new toy. If you have something 18r powered let me know.

Hi,
As above, or you got a bad earth connection. Check the main earth straps - unbolt them, clean them up and also clean where the attachment point on the chassis/engine is, and rebolt back on.

the battery might be producing the voltage, but not the current needed for starting.
you could jumper it from another car and see if it starts properly..
or put your battery in someone elses car and see if it turns over their car
etc

cheers for all the help guys much appreciated, im only 17 so still learning my way around cars. i got the battery out of my xr6 and it starts it everyday sweet so the battery definatly has enough charge in it. the connections on the lux are completely stuffed though, i was just holding them there as i turned the key, i might put the new ones on and see how i go. hopefully its jsut that thats the problem. i guess a starter motor for a old 4y isnt gonnab e to much anyways..
As someone who has too many cars and not enough batteries... I have had similar issues.. I just chuck the battery in and sit the terminals on loosish..
almost every other accessory will work ok, but hit the starter, and it just goes click... wiggle terminals, try again.. starts turning...click.. repeat... starts turning... click. tighten terminals.. and the bloody thing starts.. (bit of a pain if you are only moving it a couple of metres...)..
Tighten your terminals. and see how you go. clamp em on with vice grips if you have to... (done that more than once)
Try the new terminals first. If that doesnt fix it, starter solenoid contacts are only a couple of dollars each and are easy to fit.
