Default Legal limits for changing a hilux cluster

On my hilux, the ks read high and that doesn't bother me really, but the trip meter is totally stuff and the plastic screen is cracked.

I want to replace the whole thing but I've been told that it won't pass on pink-slip but others say it can be engineered, I rung the rta butthey were no help what so ever

I can only find ones that have alot lower ks does anyone know how I can go about changing it and getting it legal?

do the k's read high due to smaller diameter wheels? new cluster won't help that, but you can get little gearboxes to make the speed true to road speed.

ring RTA and get put through to their tech line, those guys tend to have a lot more idea.
failing that, call up a couple of blue slip places.
chances are, the new cluster will need blueslipping, to confirm the old/new km's, but then again, you could swap and then have it altered next rego time perhaps?

The high ks are true because it's got a rebuilt motor,
So they blue slip place would confirm that the ks that are shown are true,

oh, i thought you meant as in it shows the speed higher than it should be

yeah, if it is just that. not sure tho, but that sort of "official" thing is usually delegated to the blue slip places...
but if you ring up a couple and they go "huh?" and the RTA tech guy says not to worry, should be ok.

edit: i mean, you're changing the cluster because the speedo no longer works right? as if they can say no to a safety item like that

Instrument cluster is a "Prescribed Item" in NSW, you will be asked for your licence as proof of ID if you buy from a Recycler.

Just put a note in your owners manual, stating that the Cluster was replaced at XXX km, with a unit reading XXX km and you would be well and truly covered. Its more than most people would do...

Keep the old cluster and take to blue slip inspection to prove prior kms travelled.
RTA may ask to sight it as well, due to kms being different from last roadworthy.
I did the same thing to a prior rally car, when converting to six dial dash instead of standard two dial, and I showed the engineer as well and they were all happy.

No. There weren't any extra charges. It's more so to show you hadn't wound speedo trip meter back, old trick when selling cars which as you probably know is illegal which is why they ask to see original.

i don't see what you are all going on about. if you are changing one dash for another, just put it in and enjoy the functioning odo and new found visibility. maybe make a note in your owner's manual if you're keen. it all seems like extreme overthinking to me.
so much stuff. so little time.

I was under the impression its only illegal to change the cluster if you are trying to sell the car and misrepresent the kilometres. If you're completely honest about switching them I don't think its an issue.
