    Default 4agze temperature issues????

hey guys just been driving round my ae92 map 4AGZE seca and was interested to know if it is normal for the temp gauge to be reading at bout 1/3 of the way up??
i also installed the dash from the halfcut levin!!
i am just used to temp gauges goin to just under halfway resonably fast, where this one will only go that far if i hav been idling for a while!!
thermo fan doesnt kick in till it reaches just under halfway!!
just wondering if anyone else experienced this.....
    thanks!!!

    1/3 sounds about right on a 4agze

most toyotas run just under half, but my gze mr2 runs at 1/3 mostly.

otherwise if your worried about it, did you cahnge your thermostat when the engine went in, maybe it could be partially open not letting it warm up enough, this would be evident it it possibly taking ages to warm up to that temp also

yeah a faulty thermostat had entered my mind only coz the engine temp to my knowledge feels quite hot yet reading on the guage tells otherwise!!
    thanks heaps for the response!!

the gauges on a stock dash are for indication purposes ONLY, dont consider them to be anything more than a comparative indicator for coolant temperatures ranging from "HOT" to "COLD"

.... why else would there be no temp marks other than H and C??

To answer the question - you gauge, engine, coolant temps etc are fine. Dont worry about it.

was witzl has said most guages are unfortunantly COLD-NORMAL-BROKEN.

pitty really as it is nice to *actaully* know what the temps are.. that said i guess the vast majority of people wouldnt notice if it was painted on.

edit: but for the few bucks... go throw in fresh coolant (toyota red) and a new thermostat (toyota genuine) each of which costs half of stuff all and it never hurts to have fresh coolant and a new thermostat.

IMPORTANT NOTE BEFORE YOU GO AND DO THE ABOVE!!!

You MUST MUST MUST MUST MUST flush out any old coolant from your cooling system COMPLETELY before putting in new coolant - especially if you are changing types of coolant!!

If you dont, the two different types of coolant react and form a precipitate (read: chunks, flakes and sludge) which blocks your radiator and cooling system - the result is an eventually fucked engine.

It's such cheap insurance to visit your local radiator shop and ask them to perform a COMPLETE flush of your cooling system and radiator. You'd be surprised how much better your cooling system will work afterwards!

yeah thanks guys for the replies!!!
yeah i do no they are just a guide and a rough rule of thumb if it climbs higher than half there may be a prob!!
i was asking only coz i neva saw mine go above 1/3 of the way unless i had been idleing for a while!!!
i did just replace the thermostat and yes that has helped!!
as for the coolant i just filled it up with water to start with then i was gonna use a radiator flush and then fill with coolant!! ppl say the toyota red coolant is the one to use right??
would neva think of buying a toyota coolant but i can get mates rates so its not too bad!!!

why would oyu never think of buying toyota coolant ? price ? never thought of it ? think its a poor product ?

ive never heard a bad thing about it, including having used it in a number of vehicles for quite some time.

price wise its not really that much more expensive even at retail then other 3rd party brands, assuming you are buying a decent one not the kmart $2 a fill special.

oh na nothing agaist it hey im sure its a great product!!
id had the coolant done when i had the radiator replaced when the car was just a 4AGE when putting in halfcut i had just heard that the toyota red was a great coolant!! as every toyota product is rite
as to the cheap $2 kmart special which is probly seconds from a cordial company!!!
i havnt used i just thought that any good name coolant does the job!
just for the record though my last cars hav been bombs, so coolant hasnt been high on my priorties on those machines, water was good enough for me!!
thanks again guys for the info though!

the main reason you need to change it after a year or so and get rid of it properly as it becomes reactive! it breaks down and starts doing damage!
a good water temp gauge will relieve your worries!
oil temp is a better indicator of how the engine is going!
the temp gauge you have is the same as having a warning light, really only tells you when its overheating.

Just a note on the Toyota red coolant versus others. The Toyota product actually contains corrosion inhibitors. Some of the generic brands do not.

    cheers Chuck.
