i think there was a post about this on PF - i think it was 90's BMWs had a substantial firewall-mounted plug for the engine loom.
I'm seriously considering making the entire engine loom a plug-off affair at or near the firewall for the 1UZ conversion, has anyone got any good info about price, supplier, good designs...etc?
I'll be using an Adaptronic, so maximum total would be 50 pins...

We used a Deutz 47 pin plug on the racecar but they are about $300.

you could use a few smaller plugs to make it cheaper. One for inputs, one for outputs, one for ignition etc. We use up to 21 pin amphenol plugs as used in aerospace etc on the welders at work that look pretty good.
speak to your local electrical wholesaler (middys etc) or try RS components website. you will need to work out how much power you want to run through it
when i rewire the race car it will be in 3 separate looms (engine bay, cabin, boot) which will all plug into a main distribution board where the glovebox was so i will use 3 x 20ish pin connectors... but they need to carry some decent current so are a bit harder to find.

Also, a possibly useful connector found in BMWs e30s with M50 (?) engine - which would make it a 90's engine/car?
or
1980's BMW (e30 ?) have a sizeable 19 pin rectangular connector - it's an engine/ECU to chassis loom connector. Can't find a pic - but any 3-series BMW nerd will probably know about it.

I thought about this a while back as well, and came to the conclusion that ripping the couple of interrior plastics off to get at the plugs wasn't all that difficult and the time / effort involved in making it unplug at the firewall wasn't worth it.
Unless it is a race car where you will be rebuilding the engine every couple of meets, then you won't have to do it often enough to worry about it.
I felt going for a factory plug / play setup is worth the effort, as if you bend the car its a case of find another one and off you go plug n play.
