    query as to why the early 5s blocks are weak? they still have thicker walls and non cast water galleries between the bores.

    The later revision blocks fixed a weakness in the head stud casting behind the water pump which was prone to being the first place to crack. Its the same with the early 3sgte as well.

    It's probably only a issue at greater than 500 hp but if you are starting a new build why not eliminate this potential problem as you go.

    ^^^ this. i'll be chasing 300-350kw at the wheels, so I want to start strong.

    The block in the op has been given to a mate for an N/A build. He has a gen1 3SGE head and an AE101 Corolla lined up so far.

    Nope, they will crack consistently when pushed that hard, but even unmodified 3S and early 5S engines can still crack there, and in a couple of other places (like mine did).
