engine-off test for slipped harmonic balancer: put mark on crank pulley at #1 TDC, remove #1 plug and place long screw-driver (or other thin rod) down plug hole, rotate crank thru TDC and check that mark is at 0 when screw-driver/rod is at max height.

Sounds like he has already done that ^^^^.

Are you sure you are putting it into diagnostics mode?
When you bridge Te1 & E1, does the idle move up or down, engine change note, etc?
What is the timing sitting at when at idle and not in diag mode?

I'm guilty of that too - trying to find a complicated way for something to be wrong, when there's probably a simple answer.

i duno whos idea it was to use a hole in the cam gear aligning with a groove in the bearing cap, its not the best IMO. Neither is it being down next to the tower where its hard to see properly even with a mirror.
