    Default Aftermarket Speedo in MPH

Looking at changing the factory RA28 instruments for aftermarket items although with what I'm looking at the speedo is in MPH. Does anyone know the legality of this or is it all ok seeing that the speedo is still a calibrated unit and as long as you can convert the speed to KPH all is ok?

    I googled it.
    ADR 18/02 - Instrumentation

18.5. SPEEDOMETERS AND ODOMETERS (ALL VEHICLES)
    18.5.1. Speedometers
18.5.1.1. Unless otherwise ‘Approved’, every vehicle must be fitted with a speedometer which must:
18.5.1.1.1. indicate vehicle speed only in kilometres per hour; and
18.5.1.1.2. indicate the actual vehicle speed, for all speeds above 40 km/h, to an accuracy of ± 10 per cent.
18.5.1.2. The speedometer must be installed so that its indication is readily visible to the driver when seated in the normal driving position.

This was updated in 2006 to ADR 18/03

In the update cars manufactured after July 06 had the following option
5.1 Speedometers marked with an additional scale in miles per hour (mp/h) in accordance with clauses 5.1.2 and 5.1.4 of Appendix A are acceptable for the purposes of this standard, provided that the primary scale is marked in kilometres per hour (km/h) and the mp/h scale is the secondary scale.

From this I would say not leagal. However I have some speedos from America or Canada with both MPH & KPH which I will be fitting anyway.

Speedo converters are available, might be better solution than swapping a speedo

RA28s came out with MPH speedos to start with. You need to check which ADRs apply to each car.

my ra28's have all had km/h speedos.

As your unit is calibrateable - is it possible to calibrate it so when it indicates 10mph it is doing 10km/h ?

Is there any particular reason to not get an aftermarket speedo in Km/hr? (apart from being a US only item?)

ADR18 was made in 1989(?) so should not apply to all cars sold new before then, BUT, when fitting new aftermarket items, they may be required to satisfy the current ADR's unless they are considered a standard replacement?

ring the RTA tech line and ask them

fwiw, MPH speedo will make it just that little bit harder to avoid bullshit speeding fines

    Thanks guys. I simply want a full arrangement of new aftermarket instruments to go with the overall build of the car. In fact this is the speedo I refer to;

I am meeting with the enigneer later this month so will ask him the question. If he can't give me a yes or no then no one can

This leads me to ask whether anyone knows of decent aftermarket instruments that are available in KPH? I'm not after the boring black face/white face dials that seem to be everywhere but choices are limited.

use the Ed trick and make new black and white bits for the bling speedo above?

    might affect warranty tho
(but seriously, that looks like such a vague speedo.. imagine driving in Vic with it!

Yeah it's not real accurate even in MPH is it.

I am also wondering if I can dissasemble it and have a new scale printed for it. If it comes apart I'll work it out

I'm not worried about loosing any warranty..............

changing the scale on the face is " easy " (depending on your attention span during art or tech drawing classes....) we had a mercedes once that was always in for maintenance yet was really worn out .after doing some major stuff to it that should not have been due for about 5 years we noticed it was an english import and had a new face on the speedo
the odometer was still reading in miles !

    Where?
I have even emailed Autometer but have not received a reply. I'm not holding my breath for a response either. I will try and call them next week and see what they can do.

They do them, I have one. However the KPH ones are only in certain ranges, probably not the retro ones.

try speedhut.com You can design your own.

My crown has MPH speedo and i have not had any problems with rego, engineering etc. Having said that it may have been the only option for it in 1968.
