Stouty,
I belive the connections that you talk about run the heater and then back into the block/water pump before the thermostate (bypass hose) therfore provide circulation of fluid around the block and from back to front.
therotically it should be able to be blocked off as the heater valve block it most of the time in summer, and I have run it blocked of on my 3tgte race car, and it did over heat with 3 core aluminum radiator everything else new. Once I connected this back up it has significantly improved but I also had a lot of oil on my fanbelt due to too much oil pressure and turbo banjos not sealing, this could have resulted in the fan belt slipping and water pump not moving.
So in summary getting the heat from the back of the engine to the front is a good thing (particullary in a race car where good cooling is absouletly neccessary), may have helped solved my cooling problems but I was doing so much at once it hard to tell. Simple to put it in I belive I am using NPT fittings
