Default 1JZGTE VVTi starter motor fix 28100-46130 (0.8kW)

The starter motor 28100-46130 on my JZX100 Chaser 1jzgte vvti started giving trouble, only clicking (solenoid noise) when trying to start the engine. I fixed it by using the components off a 2004 toyota Echo 1.4L manual starter motor which is almost identical. When the problem first surfaced I would cycle the ignition a couple of time then it would start, getting progressively worse over about 3 months. Trouble shooting included, new solenoid, new battery, pulling starter motor apart and cleaning away carbon dust build up, shorting solenoid directly to battery to rule out voltage drop, cleaning and inspecting earth and power cables. None of these things made any difference to the clicking and not turning problem. Cleaning the carbon dust out made a small improvement to the speed at which it turned over when it actually would turn over.

I was quoted approx $460 for a new toyota one and told there were none in Aust. By comparing photos of toyota starters the Echo starter looks very similar. I bought one off ebay and was able to swap the electrical parts (electric motor, brushes and solenoid) straight into the chaser starter motor, retaining the chaser cast aluminium housing and gearhead sections. So far its 100%, and cost me $68. Hope this helps others with similar issue. Some Soarers and Supras share this starter as far as i know.

Its a common problem, especially with some particular models of Toyota's.

Easiest fix is to install a relay that will turn on the starter solenoid.

Shame you didnt bring the problem up in here to begin with... would have saved you a heap of time and $$s.

Thanks however, I was already running a relay having read these forums prior to my conversion, I should have noted that in my original post. I listed my trouble shooting steps, one was to bypass the ignition circuit ruling out voltage drop. The reason for my joining the forum was to share what solved my starter motor clicking issue, and that it wasn't the ignition circuit to blame.

Basically my starter was worn out (brushes or something in the electric motor), symptoms were clicking/starting intermittently, cheap solution was swap electrical bits off a readily available 2004 toyota echo 1.4L manual starter motor.

Newer Toyota's already have this relay, my starters have both done this, and both were sorted by new contacts.
