Default Camry with 5s-fe. I want more grunt!!

Hi, ive just purchased another camry wide body as the one i already have is getting a little warn out!! The new i just purchased has only 170 000km's on clock but engine has been flogged. i'm doing a full rebuild on the motor but whilst it's out i was wonder if any one new some easy tricks like timing, head porting ect.. i'm only chasing 20-30 more kw's from motor as they have a low power out put. i'm looking for a low down to mid range increase as my partner drives it. I'm very mechanically minded and have all the tools needed but don't know these motors!!

root a pig ? on a serious note, why not bash a V6 into it ? they go heaps better. or turbo it ? that'll liven it up.

your not gonna get an easy 20-30kW without spending some dollars.

5 or 10kW is easy enough but for 20-30 you would need either a V6 or 3SGTE transplant or a turbo kit for the 5S. If you wanted grunt quite simply you shouldnt have bought a 5SFE you should have spent money on a V6 Camry or celica GT4 instead. Or a Soarer for similar money.

Of course you could always chuck a nitrous kit on there for shits and giggles but then i gaurantee you will need an engine transplant.

It really comes down to the budget you have set yourself its acheiveable but not on a beer budget really.

Unless you can find everything second hand in good condition at mates rates in which case 3SGTE parts will go onto it with some persuasion if i remember correctly.

there is always the 2.2L Stroker 3SGTE option which might be a tad cheaper..

only a "tad" though is it really a stroker if your just bolting top and bottom parts of engines together isn't it a hybrid? would that make its a 4S-GTE?

Standard naming practice would call a 5SFE block and 3SGTE head a 5SGTE, not a stroker 3SGTE (unless you use a 3S block and a stroked crank) or 4SGTE.

    thanks for that Hiro.

Was just having a bit of fun but its ok i know where your going with it.

    EG, 1.5JZ hybrid's etc.

I still think this guy is pushing shit uphill playing with a 5SFE for an extra 20-30kW without FI or a Transplant of some description.

Gen2 3SGTE turbo manifolds bolt straight up, low boost it'll last for years. 30kw gains atmo you'll need to get the compression up (custom pistons - though terryo reakoned some mitsi piston is worth a look) port the crap out of it and oversize the valves with 3SGE items at the bare minimum. Then some decent extractors - which is hard because of that giant rubber front engine mount. I converted my SVD10 to SV21 engine mounts so I could run 3SGE 4-2-1 pipes - which has really improved midrange. To be honest the easiest way to get 30KW might be worth finding a 2AZ- FE 2.4L - which are starting to become available.

yeh, not gonna get that. you could try swapping a gen3 3s head and a thin HG. this'll give you higher CR and some decent head flow, the inlet CAM is 9.8mmlift and 252 duration for the intake.(MT)

or just swap a complete gen3 3s get 170-180HP. but is the cost worth it?

you want a V6 really, the camry is heavy so you need lowend grunt.

no limit on budget!!! i scored the car in immaculate condition for only $450 delivered, from a mate at a wreckers.
They told an old granny it was stuffed and she sold it to them 500. The dizzy is the only thing missing.

It's for my missus but i always hated when you put your foot down they have no low down pull.
Thanks guys for all your imput!!
I will be going for the "hybrid" option and i'll get my mate from Toca Performance in brissy to do the head work as he owes me..
i thought 20-30 was pushing it. and not going to turbo it because thats how the first engine died..

Drama is 5SFE pistons have more dish than a 3SGTE piston - you'll get half a point of compression with the gasket so you'll be in the high 8's if your lucky. Not really an atmo screamer...

the sfe engine line were never intended to be power-houses man - see if you can find a v6 through your wrecking mate; as others have mentioned turb's would be the only easy way of doing it.

    - I've driven on of the v6 camry's before and it was okay for what they're intended for.

    Not that thirsty either.

porting and polishing, hybrid and the like is gonna be a serious fuck around for little gain.

    - he wants low-mid end grunt - higher compression is just gonna make it a bit more responsive isn't it? (excuse my ignorance)

most likely i honestly think a 6 cylinder would be better for this application a 1MZ would do nicely.

Probably pick one up for a steal these days too as plenty of rear ended/side impacted written off camry V6's and avalons out there i would think.
