rear mounted cooler

Looking for some advice on mounting a cooler at the back of my car as the front has been taken up by heaps of other coolers and adding more heat the the engine bay area is just going to make things worse.

in this case its for the power steering fluid but I'm just looking for some general advice on air dams and placement to gain maximum efficiency from the cooler also dose any one know about the aerodynamics of doing this sort of placement.

No technical reason it can't be done. I've seen some Porsche guys have under-car mounted trans coolers in the rear.

My concern would be protecting the heat exchanger and pipework.

The aftermarket Porsche one I've seen had the cooler mounted at 45 degrees to the road surface and a "bash plate" on the underside which could have acted as a bit of a splitter. Strong stainless mesh grill in front of it too.

do you think it would be worth building sides as well? like an airdam for the cooler

Probably not necessary. Majority of front mounted PS coolers don't have shrouds.

Also if you build the sides in, then you will end up with it full of little bits and pieces small enough to get through the mesh. With the sides off, they won't build up as much.

I run a v8 trans cooler in the rear of my hilux 2wd extracab, its mounted under the tray pretty much on a 45deg angle, its not a big cooler just the standard v8 version from PWR and it does a tremendous job of cooling the A340E behind my 1uz-fe, infact i think it may keep it too cool. I have a small 7inch fan mounted about 10mm off the core, i really don't think you need to be in direct airflow as long as air can enter and exit freely from the fan, it takes about half an hr of city driving to reach anywhere near 80deg celsius and never goes over 80 even on the hottest of days in heavy traffic, i also run Castrol synthetic trans fluid called 'Transyn" only available thru Detroit Diesel-dear as poison,if you pay for it that is.....

I imagine that the fluid would get hotter at low speed? With car parks and the like.

At those speeds there wont be much air flow, so I'd opt for a thermo fan on the cooler, rather than relying on air dams, which underneath the car will only be effective at speed (purely my own speculation here) as mick08 has touched on

I have had no issues with the steering at low speeds and town driving but 8 laps at wakefield park cooked the fuild so the cooler is purely to help with high speed track work.

unfortunatly the car is very limited for room in the engine bay it has a 2JZ GTE shoehorned in there with large radiator, 100mm intercooler, massive oil cooler and is still running aircon so no room what soever at the front the other idea i had was to put it at the back of the engine bay as there is some room on the right hand side any thoughs on this?
