RA64 / RA40 axle help?!

Hi guys, I'm in need of some quick advice.

I've got an '84 ra64 Celica, with a smashed pinion gear. (T series 6.7" diff).




I've had no luck finding a diff locally for a price I'd pay, but there's a guy with an axle from an earlier Celica ('79 liftback - which I'm assuming is an RA40). He doesn't have the car anymore so can't check the VIN plate for a trans code.
Basically what are the chances of the diff from that, fitting my car? I don't want to waste the gas getting there and back for no reason.

all i can say to help is the non-GT RA40 which we only got in australia came with a T series diff in live rear axle.
