    Default TA22 Brakes

    Hi all,
Have been doing some reading about the brake upgrades for the 22 and understand that the pug/lux/rona is the go.

But..keeping it in the family ... has anyone played with the ST162 brakes for the 22? Do the struts go anywhere near fitting? or there serious difficulties.... ie mounting points very wrong on the steering for FWD vs RWD?

Interested to hear whether people have any thoughts? as there are plenty of 162s about and they magically appear in the wrecking yards all the time??

Or is this not enough of an upgrade to worry?
    Thanks
    Nathan

    Just to add some info.
    The pug rotor is 243/43/20/18.5/76/4
    And an ST162 is 258/47.5/22/21/54/5

So would change from 4 stud to 5 and have to machine a little more off the rotor?
Also is the center hole size 76 vs 54 a problem?
I would think that I would have to use the same st162 steering knuckles which would dodge that issue?
Then the ST calipers would bolt straight on.
Just a question of modification to the strut? or am I way off?

Ctrain, I have RA60 rotors & MX62 calipers in my '22 and it stops on a dime. Calipers are bolted onto the same XT130 strut as the pug/hilux brakes, although a little differently - the threads in the strut have to be milled out & the thread in the MX62 calipers is used instead. All up cost me about $400, including new RA60 rotors.

    Cheers, JB

Ah yes the VL......... wonderful piece of engineering that one....
But it doesn't really answer my question about the st162?

I would suggest you are going to be a pioneer if you want to try 162 struts in a TA22.

The issues with stud pattern... front wheel drive strut assy vs rear wheel drive strut assy.... how the steering connects... missing the driveshaft in the middle of the brakes.. etc etc etc all suggest that this is more effort that its worth.

The C/P/H upgrade is tried and proven and popular for a reason.. its easy... same as the Cressida one that is mentioned.

But if you want to be a pioneer.... give it a crack

    Ah, Thankyou Silver RA23.
The strut assy is the big one I feel? and how the steering connects?
Not sure I am up for pioneering but may give it a crack one day.

Does anyone have pics of the struts, knuckles and steering of an st162?

    Thanks
    Nathan
