Default Hilux Diff, AE71, Axles, Problems!!!

I'm having a little trouble, I know nothing about diffs

    I have an AE71 with a RN41 Hilux diff (1420mm)
I then I bought a random LSD center from some guy on the side of the road, I have no idea what it's out of.

once the center went in the axle shafts needed to be cut down to fit, I didn't do this myself, so I'm not entirely sure how much was taken off the ends, but at a guess I would say 10mm.

my problem now is I used the drum brakes off another Hilux diff, got them pressed on went to put the axles back in and they don't fit!

they look to be about 1-2mm shy of fitting flush against the backing plate on the diff, knowing nothing about diff's i thought I'd just do it up and it would pull itself in the extra 1-2mm, and it did, but then the axles don't turn at all!

I'm thinking the axles need to be cut down a little more but I don't want to cut anymore off if I'm wrong.

    can anyone offer some suggestions?

    * jaw dropped* And you have a reputation over 4000.
    With a quote of
" knowing nothing about diff's i thought I'd just do it up and it would pull itself in the extra 1-2mm, and it did, but then the axles don't turn at all! "
The axles have bottomed out basically and now you have a force pushing abnormally on bearings whihc is never a good thing

Rep is not a measurement of ones knowledge

I have never in my life had anything to do with a diff, this is literally the first time I have ever had to do anything with a diff!

so I'll just cut another 5mm off each axle and she'll apples?

Unless you got a diamond cut off saw with fluid cooling i would not bother. If you use a plain grind then it will loose its heat temper and no doubt break in the future. Also check there is enough spline to suit the diff center. Not enough spline will also cause the axles to break
Have it done correctly in a workshop.

Using a grinder is kinda dodgy, but you just need to keep it under ~250 C (ie no colour).
Not that it would lose all the tempering anyway.
Its not like the spline is doing anything if its hanging outside the mating female bit of the housing.
But a cooled cut off saw is a very good idea

Also cant you just take the backing plate and measure how much/where its fouling?

Hilux diff in an ae71, with what 195's?, ure never gonna be making a habit of breaking those axels lol, just cut a few mm off with a grinder, it will work fine man, none of this diamond cut off saw crap, its not a 7 second drag car or anything.

    just my 2c.

Bucket of water, wet rag. Job in vice, thin cutting disc on grinder. Safety glasses.
Cut- cool, with wet rag, cut- cool, cut- cool, repeat.

And thats going to heat cycle it which will make it even worse then one cut using a slit disc.
Go to ya local machine shop hand over $50 and say " Cut here using a cold saw"
