Unhappy 1GGTE running like a pig on boost - help

    Hi

I hope someone here can help me, a couple months ago i put a 1G into my SX70 cresta ever since its been giving me the shits and i cant seem to find the problem.

What happens is the car sometimes feels fine when it boosts then other times as boost comes on it makes all the right noises but there is no power, boost gauge says 10 pound but there is just nothing there. As i release the throttle to about a quarter it seems to pick up a bit like there is more power all of a sudden also when cornering with low fuel when it surges it picks up more power, could just be pinging its head off though.

I have tried larger fuel lines, changed plugs, different AFM, different fuel pump and a bunch of other things. The timing seems fine and the belt has not slipped, there is no boost leaks and temperature seems to make no difference so im all out of ideas. I wired the car up a bit dodgy to say the least so i have no flashing code light which could maybe help.

People have told me there is a knock sensor under the intake mani that can break and cause problems but its not easy to get to so i would rather be sure before i try to get at it.

So i guess what im asking is has anyone had this problem and solved it?

Any help would be muchly appreciated.

    Thanx

    Adam

You've given yourself the best advice already. Do this properly, it will make solving these problems SO much easier.

yes doing things properly is better but your not being very helpful, if i knew how to do it properly would of done so first time.

Blair what have you tried to remedy the problem?

    Stompy bro,

It may be in limp mode due to fucked knock sensors.

They are NOT that hard to get to , 1 is above starter, the other is under the 2nd intake runner from the plenum (or above the TVIS) ...

Try scoping out on Z20soarer.org if any of the soarer boys have spares, they are cheap 2nd hand and might fix the limp mode issue.

    other than that.

Timing (triple check it, make it 10 advance!) , Plugs, And turbo play checks would be my first few steps.

Wow, way to make a good impression on the forums. Dude, if you can get the car wired and running, the check engine light is a piece of piss. You've done a multitude of things to try and remedy the problem to no avail, all of which are more complicated. What I told you was the best piece of info you've got. It does sound like a faulty knock sensor and/or wiring. With mine unplugged the engine drove like crap. If you spend the 10 mins wiring the light though, or heck any light to the ECU, it'll tell you itself if it's that code.

    lol

ill work hard and strive to make sure to make a better impression next time.

ill send you a fruit basket

hey john .. yeah tripple checked it and tris had a look too.. but it sounds like exactly same issues as your mate was having. Do you know if limp mode gets reset every time you turn the car off? Cos sometimes when i first start it and its cold and i give it shit it runs fine...(yes i know its bad to thrash cold cars)

And i changed plugs even though the old ones seemed fine, when i floor it and it drops a gear i get a savage miss happening. All i know is im very over this

If i find a solution ill post.. thanx everyone

I'm fine, just don't be a douche if someone gives you useful advice.

If it's the knock sensor, yes. Of course, you'd know this because the check engine light comes on until you turn the car off

If I kept my revs low with dodgy knock sensor wiring, it seemed okay. As soon as I hit boost though, the check engine light would come on and the more boost I tried, the slower it went because it kept retarding the timing.

lol.. not exactly a first impression.. he's not exactly new here..

saying "do it properly" given the context of the quesiton is not useful advice at all.. its just being a smart arse..

had the question been "should i wire up my car dodgy to get it running or should i wire it up properly?" then your advice would have been useful...

Adam- Dont worry about JCMO- the way of the bodge is not strong with this one.

I'll have a scout around for some knock sensors for ya..

Bah, I laughed and cheered your stubby holder IC piping just as much as anyone else! I just don't see the point going to a shitload of effort replacing things when 2 mins with a soldering iron and a globe would probably tell him what the problem is.

    lol.. ah yes.. good times..

the problem wasnt soldering etc.. it was the fact that nobody had a clue what wire it was etc.. and the wiring diagrams were....sketchy.. to say the least..

i asked around here for ages for a diagram for a sx70 cresta.. nobody could produce one... so rather than waiting for help... it was wired with the best information/guesswork available..

If you can't work out the body wiring, don't worry about it. Just wire an external globe to it, sure it's not as nice, but it will work, and going with the theme of the build, it's consistent

Have a search for the thread about how to check the codes, it'll have the procedure and the codes.
