Default 1G-GTE Hilux strange driveline noise

Hey all, I've been on here for a little bit but not posted much. I just bought a hilux with a 1G-GTE and am getting a bit concerned about a noise im getting from somewhere around the gearbox. I know its very hard to diagnose a noise from a description, but i'll give it a shot. Please note i have tried searching, and found some ideas, but my problem is a little different. So here goes-

Driving normally is fine, box shifts smooth. Get a little bit of vibration at low rpm (ie prob ~20km/h) but nothing too serious, then goes away. When travelling over around 85km/h, and it seems to be pronounced as speed increases, i hear a sort of brief grinding-rattling type sound when changing from on throttle to off throttle. It is really the time in between, almost like it happens when changing from loaded to unloaded. Vibration is also noticable at speed, but not really any worse than when it is at low speed. It is also possible to hold the throttle at a certain position (at over 85) and make the grinding sound continue (obviously i avoid this).

Can anyone give me an idea what this may be? I originally was thinking thrust bearing, but my research suggests its not likely. Clutch? Hopefully its not the box! Anyway im taking it to get looked at next wednesday, was just hoping some knowledgable ppl on here could give some suggestions.

Will post pics etc of ute soon in another thread, looking forward to becoming involved in the forum. Cheers!

Have a good look at your uni joints mate.
I have a 1g hilux and all three of my rear tailshaft uni joints have been replaced now.
The last one started making noise only about 2 weeks ago.

Sometimes they can be hard to spot too. The last one that went was making noise for ages and i looked at it but it all looked fine, i thought it might have been the diff or the gearbox.
I ended up driving it for a bit longer and it got worse, i had another look under the car and this time i saw a crack in one of the uni joint caps.
Put a new one in and its like a night and day difference. Only $10 each from Malz last time i went in there (but is a bitch of a job sometimes).

    Goodluck

Thanks for the reply Rota, i hope its only something simple like that. Called SSS automotive in Girraween for a price on a W58.....$850! Ouch!

Anyway im taking it to Silverwater Auto on Wed morning. I figured they were a site sponsor so they must be alright. I think its getting worse though, seems like you can hear it at lower speeds...

Im finding more and more things as i go with this car, like when i pulled the heat wrap of the exhaust and found a huge gap in the thing right behind the turbo oh well the fun begins lol hope its not too much to get everything sorted, its quite fun to drive, and i do like the sound of the 1g

check clearances of motor , could be something simple like a/c unit hitting body shell or something as you load motor .

    good luck

its funny, my mate said somthing to me when i was doing the conversion in mine.. once you finish that you'll spend the next 12months fixing problems.. its true
i have now found out that mine has a blown head gasket

with the noise i have the similar noise at lower speeds when i'm crusing at like 30-40k's then put my foot down. the noise in my hasn't changed at all and i don't get any vibration

good luck with it all though

I have to agree with Rota!

I am part way through replacing my uni joints now. Did one of them yesterday.

In hindsight I should of just done the lot - but I was so sure the others were ok. They don't have to be that loose before they make noises and from your description of the symptoms I am quite confident it is a uni or unis!

re: mxracer - i wish it was an a/c bracket, i got no a/c! lol

Im hoping its just uni's however i have a feeling its going to be something more serious, vibration seems to be getting more noticeable and noise getting easier to hear at lower speeds... will find out tomorrow i guess!

Keep ya posted, thanks for the replies fellas!

Well i took it into Silverwater auto last week and they tell me its the exhaust hitting on the chassis!

I've found that someone has done a reeeeaaaallly dodgey job on the turbo. Looks like they have pulled off a nice one, and slapped a cheapy on there and welded it on WHILE ON THE DUMP PIPE IN THE ENGINE BAY!!!! Pulled the dump pipe off and it wasnt even welded on the bottom, DODGEY!!! So i pulled that off and welded it up. I was going to remake the front section of the exhaust, but I couldnt get any 3" mandrel bend when i was back at home and i have no access to a welder here It seemed like i got better fuel economy on the return trip after welding the gaps up lol

Good news i guess is that guys at Silverwater reckon there is nothing wrong with the gearbox! Other issue the guys found was that the tail shaft is hanging out quite a way, im not sure exactly how far but prob around 50mm! I tried to undo the tail shaft while i had it on stands but had no luck, bolts too tight! Need to get it onto a hoist with a big breaker bar or something.

So hopefully the guys at silverwater are right, its just the exhaust rattling and making a horrible noise, and the drive shaft is causing the vibration. Will try take it to a friend with a hoist in the coming weeks and sort it out. I was thinking of making a whole new dump pipe, but the turbo is crap and i want a bigger one, maybe i'll just wait till i get a new one and make it then...

told ya it would of been something hitting on chassis

i did a 1jz hilux back in 2002 and i remember there was some tight clearances ..

Mxracer was right! Yeah i just thought i was gearbox as i could hear the noise coming from where the gearbox is and feel the vibration through the gearstick. I think its loud in that area as the exhaust runs from the right hand side of the chassis to the left under the gearbox. Probably the vibrating sound is amplified along that part i guess!

Could this be adding to the vibration? Looks like the tail shaft is hanging out about 45mm from the gearbox. How far is the yoke supposed to hang out in these gearboxes? I've heard anything from 10-25mm in general

Hey guys got a bit of an update on this issue - i pulled the exhaust off the chassis and packed it out with some heat pad and aluminium. That stopped the ratting on the chassis, however it did not stop the noise i get at speed.

So if i am going over around 80km/h when i change into 5th i get the weird high frequency vibration/grinding/rattling noise. I also get it if i just put the clutch in at speed, and also if i put it into neutral at speed.

Any ideas what this could be? Its not the exhaust rattling on the chassis, and i dont think its a thrust bearing or anything like that as it makes it when its in neutral. Maybe bearings in gearbox or something? As you can see above the tailshaft is hanging out a fair way, could it be that?

Running short on $ atm guys so trying to sort it out myself, all ideas appreciated!
