Do you know you can pull out the cluster and adjust a screw inside to get the tacho spot on? I did it for mine and its pretty much perfect like 100rpm out at 7k

if the surf tacho is a 2lt3 diesel tacho i think u cant get enough adjustment with the screw
u can with a 4 cyl petrol tacho
ive seen a 1j vvti into a surf 2lte and the tacho was ok at idle but jumped all over the shop as u reved it

yeah guys, ive had the cluster apart and adjusted the screw, and as "dumbass" says, its ok at idle and aslo ok at a constant speed, but as you rev, the needle jumps around. I'd say its because the 2LTE sending a magnetic pulse, and the 2JZ sending an electric pulse. I'm on the lookout for a tacho with an 0-8000rpm range, possibly from a celica/supra

none of the local wreckers have any complete front chassis cuts for my conversion, but i have bought another ps box to replace my worn one, for "crossover steering"

Get a petrol tacho they have enough adjustment but only read to about 7k but they still do alright, most of the time i change before 7k because you're not making any more power anyway.

Spartan auto lokka in the front diff makes them go everywhere without the expense of a SAS swap nor having to do a sump change so the diff don't smack into it. You really only need the solid axle if you want to get into rock crawling. And yes V6 4runner instrument cluster is the one. I use those with the 1UZ swaps

Fantastic work mate. Bet it is a bit of fun now!

Any legality issues in going to the live axle/spring front?

found a few front diffs to slide under the front now, and now that the brakes on my 2wd ute are done............ and xmas is done and dusted........... and theres a few public holidays coming up soon......

is there much demand/interest for a live axle conversion on these surfs? I guess the conversion would be the same on a '98 onwards hilux too right?

I have seen a few done, mostly down NSW/VIC though. Seen both four runner and surf done, leaf front and coil rear, not ideal on road and quite poor flex off road. If you are handy with the old welder you could splice the three link set up out of a 80/100 landcruiser in there, just as easy to get engineered as what you plan. Just remember measurements are critical. There is a bloke down here who runs a shop called buds customs who does this to newer hilux's. The other thing to remember is the ifs has wider diffs than a live axle, so to rectify this you will need a hub spacer kit, i think locktup 4x4 do these, they are net based and reasonably priced. The spartan lockers are poo too, if you are going to lock it go arb, only way to have a locked 4x4 that doesn't break axles.......
