Jaycar AX-3684 - Bitumen Based Sound Deadener - 2 sheets of 330x330mm $26.95
A few weeks ago I needed some self adhesive sound deadening material to damp the car doors that vibrated under heavy bass. First I called the usual parts places and of the few who knew what I was even talking about said to try a panel beaters suppliers. Only two in Newcastle; one didn’t carry it and the other wanted $30 for a 500 x 500 sheet. Not bad I thought; $30 a door. I then happened to be buying some polystyrene foam the following day from an industrial suppliers and noticed a piece of the stuff amongst their product samples. The price; $14 for a 1m x 1m sheet of self adhesive 3mm thick damping mat. Don’t get ripped off especially from audio shops who sell the same thing for about 5 times the price! Contact an insulation supplier instead.

...... butt scratcher?!
Hmm... does this said "industrial supplies" store have a name by any chance?I remembered looking for a cheap option back in the days when i was into car audio, as paying $30 for 30cm*30cm sheet sounded rediculous to me! But i couldnt' find any.
Just outta interest, the bitumen based deadener you buy from audio stores/ebay simply adds mass to the panels to lower the resonant frequency and stops buzzing... it isn't really insulation.
The company here in Newcastle is "Insulation Industries".
The committee sat for weeks to decide on a punchy, descriptive company name.
On a more serious note, is this the same type of thing you find on the footwells of stock cars? A tar based, plastic/foam backed pad that sticks to the metal?
From what i understand, this is a thin sheet of tar/bitumen which is uber-sticky. One side u stick to the floor/door/etc and the other has a thick foil layer... simply to stop it sticking to anything else.
This doesn't cure hard like OEM deadener, and certainly doesn't look factory. Does the same job but!
Timbo = correct.

Mate just goto supercheap and buy the spray on sound deadener stuff for $10 a can. Stay away from the paint on stuff cos it dries too quick. I found the spray was alot easier to get an even surface than that stick on stuff and does the same job. Also alot easier to get into the door jams and stuff.
You'd have to spray on a hell of a lot to get to the same thickness as the stick on damping mat though.
That's very true. The brush on stuff goes on REALLY thick, but generally has the finish of horse p00! I just found the spray cans to be significantly more expensive (was from a small country hardware shop) so i used a 4litre tin of the brush on stuff thinking a big thick gooey layer would be great as sound insulation and buzz deadening, and it is hidden under carpet etc. I since heard that putting it on any thicker than the spray on stuff is a waste anyway, as it does nothing more than put on weight! So for the floor/doors i'd just mask everything off, buy a 2 litre tin of the sprayable stuff and sacrafice a cheap gun to spray it with. Much neater, easier and just as effective as the brush on.Originally Posted by limbo
also heard that roofing supply places have it aswell, but not 100% sure, but sounds right![]()
You'll find that the car stuff actually foams up abit to become thincker so its not too bad.
Timbo yeah i had the same prob with the can whcih i used first then used the spraycans and found they did a better job.
If you do what Timbo suggested try putting in some thinners and it help me slightly to keep it from becoming too thick, jsut don't go crazy cos it just become runny and hard to work with.
I can confirm that Bunnings sell the roofing equivalent, used to seal between roof tiles or gaps in gutters. It's a bitumen tar with foil backing, bitumen side sticks damn good to anything. Comes in rolled up strips, but come as wide as 30cm - don't know how much the wide stuff is though, as I only needed thin stuff to patch a roof.
There is some pretty good stuff which you can get at Bunnings in the roofing department. Basically it is a tar based adhesive backed with aluminum foil. It comes in some fairly decent rolls, and is heaps cheaper than the Dynamat or similar which they sell at the car audio places. I used it in my Corolla to seal off the doors and boot, and it did a wonderful job.
From memory it was about $30 for a 100mmx10m roll.

I went to Bunnings Springwood and asked after this stuff. They looked at me like I was speaking Swahili. They had no idea.
