sealant v gaskets

Has anyone had success with using sealant instead of gaskets for thermostat assmeblies? I made some gaskets for my 1ggte out of good quality gasket material but when I assmebled it all, part of the thermostat assembly broke. The gasket material is about 1mm or so thick so I think the assembly flexed on the gasket and cracked when I tightened it up

So I thought I would give some of that selastic sealant a go this time. Anyone had any luck with it?

You can use a sealer no problems. The best I have ever used is the Toyota "Seal Packing" as used by Toyota workshops and sold through their spare parts. I first came accross it when I worked there as a mechanic. I have used many similar products but none as good. It will seal anything but the only downfall is the price which is about $30 a tube but well worth it. I use it on thermostat housings all the time with or without a gasket no worries.

Yeah, I use Silastic black sealant for all sorts of shit. I'm also a fan of the Permatex stuff, but I find it tends to go "off" a fair way into the tube so I never get to finish it off. The Silastic one tends to just have a tiny little bit you pull off and you're good to go.

That said, the gasket isn't the culprit here, you are As I was when I broke a bolt off. Put it on evenly (i.e. do each bolt in stages so they're always sorta similar torques) and don't overtighten and a gasket should work fine.

i use Loctite - BlueMaxx.

works well. about $14-17 a bottle, depending where you can get it.

Toyota "Black" sealant goo (as used on sumps and everything else) is actually a Loctite product
Dont know which one though....

i've used silastic, loctite, and just about everything else on the market.... and i still find that a good gasket beats the goo.
Although sometimes i use a combination of gasket AND goo, and that just becomes teh uber gasket of inpenetrability.

I nearly always use a a litle goo even if i'm using a gasket, just a little smear to fill any imperfections.

i used the permatex also on all oil & coolant type gaskets. Just make sure you do the whole area and put abit extra and let it dry on the item. Also the good thing about permatex is that once dry you can still add new items to it and it will bond to the old stuff!

All FTW = Permatex, Loctite, and Toyota. Just make sure you let them cure before you start your car, otherwise its like a sprinkler

ive seen some more of the "Maxx" series, black maxx, blue maxx, i might be wrong, but redmaxx as well...?

im sure they're all the same bloody thing anyway (toyota and loctite).

but why not buy it badged as loctite, rather than paying inflated toyota badged products

lol, i used some generic sealant to hold one side of my thermostat housing there, cause i was stupid and over tourqed the bolt and snapped it. so as a temp fix i googed the shit out of it. and bolted the opposite side down nice and tight...
its been a few months, ive lost no water. and its hanging in there ahahah

I've used a few different sealants with fair success, but i found that one particular type was better for sealing oil leaks on the fly (err.. not that i've ever had to do this), and it was a red one - forget what type it was, i'll have to check. It is however very difficult to clean off without the aid of some form of solvent or whatever.

When i'm using normal gaskets, i tend to always use a sealant as well. Better safe than sorry i say

i use the bluemaxx for things to do with water. the black or grey (grey prefferably) for things to do with oil and the copper maxx for 'hot' stuff like turbo/exhaust flanges.

A little late, but not too much.
The problem people have with gasket makers (RTV) generally comes fomr not following the directions. The vast majority have long cure times, that require re-torquing early in the curing process.
I preffer (by a wide margin) RTV Ultra Black. Fast curing, no re-torquing, and it's the most petrolium product resistant of the RTV's.
RTV Ultra Blue is also top notch & is more widely avaliable (atleast here) in the large spray cans.



Be careful when choosing one. You get exactly what you pay for. Generic ones are... Not good for much past lawnmower engines.

there is a few ways to do them. Gasket. Gasket with locktite No3.Sealant. as its alloy you might have over tightened it, remmeber it will grow a little with heat aswell so you dont need to mega tighten. you prob find it was fatigued from heat cycling and or osmosis.
Do it again and put less torque into it and it will be fine!
and dont worry,you are not the first or last to do it.
